CROOKSTON, Minn. (August 21, 2007) – With a host of new academic enhancements, facilities upgrades and a renewed commitment to NCAA Division II, the University of Minnesota, Crookston is looking ahead to an exceptional 2007-08 academic year. The campus is strategically focused on exceptional students, faculty and staff, along with exceptional organization and innovation, and plans for the upcoming year were developed around this initiative.

Two new degree programs in biology and pre-veterinary medicine have expanded options for students and allow for greater opportunities in the sciences. A bachelor’s degree in biology will offer students advanced courses designed to emphasize studies in either animal or plant systems. The Agriculture Department gives students interested in veterinary studies in equine science or animal science an opportunity for a pre-professional degree in veterinary medicine.

“Our goal at the University of Minnesota, Crookston is to provide an exceptional applied educational experience by motivating and inspiring students to become lifelong learners and global citizens,” Chancellor Charles H. Casey said. “We know that education is all about the students and helping them be successful in securing a world class University of Minnesota degree and the career they want.”

Classroom teaching and learning will be the focus for the re-defined Crookston campus Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT), which will support faculty and staff in their efforts to empower students with both knowledge and abilities.

“The Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology will integrate technology, focusing not just on its use, but on the resources and assistance needed for teaching and learning,” said Senior Vice Chancellor. “This Center will enhance the student experience on the Crookston campus by supporting our faculty.”

Equipment upgrades in the chemistry labs will provide a better learning environment for students and encourage undergraduate research. In addition, an Honors Program is being finalized and recruitment will begin for fall 2008 enrollment. The goal of the honors program is to recognize the achievements of students, to encourage continued high performance and attract high-achieving students to the Crookston campus.

With the U of M, Crookston’s continued commitment to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Golden Eagles and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, more than 100 new student-athletes and 10 new staff members have joined campus. Investments in the football field and gymnasium benefit both student-athletes as well as fans. A resurfaced track, new concession stand and restrooms as well as a ticket booth have been constructed at Ed Widseth Field and a new floor has been installed in the Lysaker Gymnasium. A refreshed athletic Web site online at www.GoldenEagleSports.com showcases the teams and improvements.
