CROOKSTON, Minn. (February 15, 2007) – To recognize National Women’s History Month in March, the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) has scheduled a number of events centered around the  theme for 2007 “Generations of Women Moving History Forward.” The Women’s History Month project was founded in 1980 to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women and has been celebrated for some ten years on the UMC campus.

This year’s events include:

On Wednesday, March 7, 2007, Deanna Latson will speak on women’s health in Kiehle Auditorium at 7 p.m. Eat Right, Feel Good, Look Great! Deanna Latson, a top lecture entertainer and health educator, has been inspiring audiences across the country with amazing health information. Latson has a Clinically Certified Nutritionist's degree (CCN), a Masters Degree in Health Communication, and is currently finishing her Naturopathic Doctor Degree (ND). This event is sponsored by UMC Concerts and Lectures. The event is free and open to the public.

On Thursday, March 8, 2007, UMC highlights women’s scholarships with a reception at 5 p.m. followed by a concert with Patty Kakac of the Granary Girls at 6 p.m. The reception kicks off the evening in the Kiehle Rotunda followed by the concert in the Kiehle Auditorium. During the evening, women donors and scholarship recipients will be highlighted. Tickets are $10 with proceeds going to women’s scholarships. The event is sponsored in part by the UMC Women’s Project Fund, and both the reception and concert are free to UMC students.

During the evening, women donors and scholarship recipients will be highlighted. Students featured are Aspire Scholarship recipients: Hanidah Khamaraddin Erickson and Juanita Lopez from Crookston, Minn.; June Shaver Athletic Scholarship recipients: Cassie Yates, Buffalo, Minn., and Erin Flynn, Bloomer, Wis.; Online Scholarship recipient: Amanda Hinrichs, Breckenridge, Minn.; and UMC Womens Association Scholarship recipient: Nicole Erickson, Starbuck, Minn.



On Tuesday, March 20, 2007, folk singer Joe Crookston will be in concert in Bede Ballroom at 7 p.m. Crookston is one of New York’s finest acoustic songwriters and performers and will perform a concert entitled “An Intergenerational Festival of Song.”  The evening will feature coffee from the student run coffee house on campus, the Golden Eagle Grind. Tickets are $5 or $2.50 for anyone bringing a canned good for the area food shelf. UMC students may attend free of charge.

On March 22, 2007, a Red Tent Celebration will take place with activities beginning at 2 p.m. in Bede Ballroom and concluding with a Women’s Voices in Public Policy Panel at 5 p.m. Members of the panel include: Maxine Penas, former Legislator in the Minnesota House of Representatives; Sharon Bring, Marshall County Commissioner; Tamara Yon, District Judge; Brenda Elmer, District Staff Assistant for U.S. Senator Norm Coleman; and Sharon Josephson, District Staff Assistant for Collin Peterson, U.S. House of Representatives.  Other activities and presentations include balancing life and work issues, exercises in relaxation and discussion on women’s health issues. Events are free and everyone is welcome.
 
On Monday, March 26, there will be an “Inequity Bake Sale” from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Northern Lights Lounge.  Students, staff and faculty can enjoy homemade treats and goodies using a pricing scale set in accordance with the wage gap between men and women in the U.S. Proceeds go to the ASPIRE Scholarship Fund. The bake sale is sponsored by Women's History Month Planning Committee.
