Commuter Student Fact There are a variety of factors that influence the overall success of commuter students. Commuter students have a need for opportunities often associated with residence on campus, more time with faculty, more intensive peer interaction time, and a closer integration of their living and learning experience (Knefelkamp & Stewart, 1983). It is important that commuter students are given the same opportunities for growth and student development as those that are given to on-campus students. Reference Knefelkamp, L.L., and Stewart, S.S. (1983). Toward a new conceptualization of commuter students: The developmental perspective. In S.S. Stewart (ed.), Commuter students: Enhancing their educational experiences. New Directions for Student Services, no. 24. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
