Information Technology Management

The ITM program prepares students for positions in technology, networking, and other information management positions in business, industry, and education. Graduates will have the knowledge, experience, and skills to succeed in technology-related careers and the business and management competencies for mid-management positions such as information network and intranet administrators, webmasters, applications developers, technology project managers, and information systems managers.

ITM classes give UMC a unique twist on service learning. ITM students have participated in service learning projects that vary from creating Web pages to creating databases to designing systems for local community agencies .

Web Design

Dan Lim's Web Design class, which is offered almost every fall and spring semester, create Web sites for local businesses, not-for-profits, or UMC offices. Students use the Web pages to hone their skills as Web designers.

Below is an example of a Web page created by Kim Pinske. There was a need for a Web site to act as a resource for commuting students. Click here to view the Web site Pinske completed.

Students in Lim's class learn how to create graphics, use several of the programs Web designers use, and create Flash animations.

Lim goes through a thorough screening process to decide on the projects the students will use. The process includes a sit-down interview with the potential community partner where Lim lays down the responsibilities as the client. He stresses that the client provide the students with all the content for the Web page. This helps the students concentrate on the Web design and not the text and prose. This has been found to be a very successful practice.

Online Databases/SQL Server

In recent years, as holiday and semester breaks approached, students could be seen tacking notes detailing their needs for rides to their hometowns on a bulletin board in the student center lounge. Students willing to offer rides did the same. Above the bulletin board were paper cutout letters spelling out "Rideshare Board." Underneath, on the left side, were paper letters spelling out "Need a Ride." On the right, similar letters spelled "Have a Ride."

Andy Smith and Stacy Kringlen-Smith, both seniors in ITM, saw the need to take the Rideshare Board online where it will more useful to UMC's tech savvy students. Smith and Kringlen worked on the project in Martin Lundell's Senior Projects course as a capstone project for their four years at UMC. Click here to visit the new online Rideshare Board .
