Campus Escort & Security Services

The Department of Residential Life/Security Services offers the service of Campus Escort to all Students, Faculty and Staff. This service includes building to building, building to car, and car to building walking escorts. The hours that Campus Escorts are available are 8:00p-12:00a daily. To obtain an escort, please call 218/289.0604.

Security Services
is a function of the Office of Residential Life & Security Services and assists in developing the total life of the campus community. The primary function is to enforce State and University policies and be of assistance to faculty, staff, and students. The department's professional staff consists of a director and part-time officers. Officers are on duty primarily during the evening hours.

The Campus
The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) borders on the northern edge of Crookston, Minnesota with approximately 200 employees serving more than 2,000 students.

Security Services
The Office of Residential Life and Security Services is responsible for law enforcement and security on campus.  The department professional staff consists of a Director, and part-time officers.  Officers are on duty primarily during the evening hours.

It is University policy to encourage the reporting of all crimes committed on campus and to assist victims of those crimes.  Campus crime reports are printed in the UMC Bulletin and the Eagle's Eye campus newsletter.

Programs & Services
The department emphasizes crime prevention by minimizing crime opportunities and encouraging students and employees to be responsible for their own and other's safety.

The department encourages "Operation ID." An engraver is available in the residence halls to provide an opportunity for proper identification of valuables.  Educational programming on sexual violence and exploitation is offered throughout the academic year.

Campus
Most campus facilities are accessible during normal business hours Monday through Friday.  Shrubbery and other vegetation posing a threat to visibility is regularly trimmed.  Parking lots are lighted.  Reception areas in residence halls are open to the public on weekdays during the day hours.  Living areas are considered private and guests must be escorted by a resident.  The University has no off-campus sorority or fraternity houses.

Drug & Alcohol Policy
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is concerned for the well-being of all members of the University community.  Consistent with this goal is the desire to foster an atmosphere at UMC in which abstinence from alcohol and the use of other drugs is respected.  Where chemical dependency is present in the academic community, the University will encourage and provide reasonable help for any of its members who seek personal assistance.

UMC provides for the use and possession of intoxicating and nonintoxicating alcoholic beverages within the University community in accordance with the following provisions:

1.   On University property, no person shall possess or consume any nonintoxicating or intoxicating liquor except in areas designated by the President in consultation with the Chancellor. Sale of nonintoxicating or intoxicating liquor is prohibited on the University Campus.

2.   As used in this policy statement, the terms "intoxicating liquor" and nonintoxicating liquor" shall have those meanings ascribed to them by the statues of the State of Minnesota .  Minnesota law forbids students under 21 years of age from possessing any alcoholic beverage within the state.

3.   Violation of this policy by a student shall be a violation of the Student Conduct Code.  Violation of the policy by others shall be handled in the ways normally associated with violations by a member of that group on the campus.  Violation of the policy by any person during the course of an appropriately approved event, whether such event be open or closed to the general public, shall automatically revoke the license conferred by the ticket or invitation to such event and violators will be asked to leave the premises.  Ushers and officers are instructed to refuse admission to ticket holders and other persons invited to such event if such person is intoxicated.

 4.   Permission to serve intoxicating liquor at a group function must be given in writing by the President with the approval of the Director of Student Activities and the Chancellor.

5. The possession and consumption of alcohol beverages and/or possession of alcohol containers is not permitted in the University residence halls.

U of M Sexual Assault Victims' Rights Policy
If you are the victim of a criminal sexual assault on University of Minnesota, Crookston property, you may file a criminal charge with the Crookston Police Department at 9-911.

If you would like assistance in notifying the proper law enforcement and campus authorities, you may call the Office of Residential Life at 281-8531, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  After office hours and weekends 289-0604.  The Violence Intervention Project (281-2864) can also provide assistance. 

Upon receipt of a complaint, the University will investigate and respond to your complaint.  You may participate in any University disciplinary proceeding concerning your sexual assault complaint. If you wish, you may also have a support person present with you.  You have the right to be notified of the outcome of any University disciplinary proceeding concerning your complaint, subject to the limitations of the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

The University will follow the direction of law enforcement authorities in obtaining, securing, and maintaining evidence relating to your sexual assault incident.  University authorities will also assist in preserving materials which are relevant to a University disciplinary proceeding.

At your request, the University will assist you as is reasonable and feasible (in cooperation with law enforcement authorities) in shielding you from your alleged assailant.  This may include providing you alternative work, academic, or living arrangements if these options are available and feasible.  Educational programs are scheduled throughout the academic year.
