Procedures for Storing Weapons on University Property
UMC Residential Life
UNIVERSITY POLICY. The University's Board of Regents regulates the possession and carrying of weapons by members of the University community and by others when on University property. No person, whether a student, employee, or visitor, shall possess or carry a weapon while on University property, except as specifically authorized.
University property means all real property, buildings, and facilities under the primary control of the University through ownership, lease, or other means. This includes all public or private locations, arenas, stadiums, and halls that the University has leased for University events, including, but not limited to, academic and administrative meetings, intercollegiate and intramural sporting events, and student, faculty, and staff activities. University property also includes all places of residence owned by the University in which students reside.
Firearm means a gun, whether loaded or unloaded, that discharges shot or a projectile by means of an explosive, a gas, or compressed air.
UMC PROCEDURES . The President has delegated to the UMC Office of Residential Life permission for the lawful storage of weapons on University property per the following procedures.
The possession of firearms and other dangerous weapons are not allowed in student rooms or on University property. Storage of a firearm must be out of sight inside a locked personal vehicle or registered and stored with Residential Life/Security staff located in Skyberg Hall.
Weapons Storage Procedures:
1) On-campus resident contacts Resident Advisor or Assistant Director for Residential Life informing them of the weapon. At that time the student will be informed that they have two options:
A) Store the weapon out of sight in a locked vehicle, or
B) Check the weapon with UMC Residential Life and place in storage in the locked Security Gun Cabinet.
2) Resident Advisor or Assistant Director takes the weapon to the secure gun cabinet located in the Skyberg Office accompanied by the student.
3) Resident Advisor or Assistant Director completes the Firearm Check-In Log.
4) Resident Advisor or Assistant Director labels the weapon with a number and student's name and marks that number on the Firearm Check-In Log.
5) Resident Advisor or Assistant Director gives the resident a receipt tag with the number that the weapon was registered under.
Weapons may be checked-in and out between the hours of 8:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m.
Residential Life retains the right to refuse to return a weapon to a student who is in an altered state including, but not limited to, individuals who are intoxicated, aggressive, or depressed.
