Tutoring Services
Guidelines for Peer Tutoring
The Academic Assistance Center, in Owen Hall 270, coordinates a peer tutoring program. Tutors are full time students who have been recommended, in writing, by the instructor of the subject matter involved or have presented transcript documentation to the Tutor Coordinator.
Students requesting a tutor must:
- Get a tutor request card. It is blue and can be picked up in the Academic Assistance Center.
- Complete the form and have the subject instructor sign it.
- Return the form to the Academic Assistance Center.
- Meet with the Tutor Coordinator to become familiarized with the rules and expectations.
Students interested in becoming a tutor must:
- Get a competency to tutor form. It is yellow and can be picked in the Academic Assistance Center.
- Complete the form and have the subject instructor sign it or present transcript documentation.
- Meet with the Tutor Coordinator to become familiarized with the rules and expectations.
- Complete a tutor training module assigned by the Tutor Coordinator in the Academic Assistance Center.
- Fill out payroll information at the Financial Aid Office in Selvig Hall (directly below AAC/SSS).
Tutoring sessions are scheduled as soon as possible after the request form is turned in. Students are notified when, where, and with whom the tutoring sessions will be held. This notification is usually done through campus email.

- Peer tutoring by paid students
- Professional tutoring by Academic Assistance Center staff
- Supplemental instruction (varies by semester)
- Study groups
- Staff guidance with computer technology
- Computerized tutorials in a variety of subjects
- Staff assistance with study skills
Guidelines for Peer Tutoring:
Responsibilities of Tutor
- Complete Tutor Training Modules as directed by Tutor Coordinator: http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/students/ubar002/tutortraining/TutorWelcome.htm
- Fill out payroll information at the Financial Aid Office in Selvig Hall located directly below AAC/SSS.
- Keep proper records and turn them in to the Academic Assistance Center on time. This includes:
- A tutor competency card (yellow)
- Contact Cards
- Bi-weekly payroll time cards
- Be regular and prompt at tutoring sessions. Notify the tutee of any conflicts, illnesses, or "no shows."
- Help those you tutor by:
- maintaining a positive attitude towards the course, instructor, and student being tutored
- answering and asking questions
- assisting in organizing course materials
- encouraging good study habits
- NOT doing work for them
- All tutor sessions will be scheduled by the Tutor Coordinator and conducted at the Academic Assistance Center unless other arrangements are made with the tutor program coordinator.
Responsibilities of Tutee
- Complete "Request for Tutor" card and meet with Tutor Coordinator to discuss procedures and rules.
- Study the course material before each tutor session. Come to each session prepared with specific questions.
- Attend EACH class. A tutor session is not an acceptable substitute for a cut class.
- Be regular and prompt at tutoring sessions. Bring along any materials you may need at the tutoring session. Notify the tutor in a timely manner of illness or any other need to cancel a session.
- Implement suggestions for improved study habits as suggested by your tutor.
- Show appreciation for your tutor's efforts.
- Notify the tutor program coordinator of any problems.
- Complete program evaluations as requested by the tutor program coordinator.
