UMC Dietetics Club 5K Run/Walk Set for April 15Students involved in the Dietetics Club and the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will sponsor a 5K run/walk on Saturday, April 15. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m., with registration starting at 1 p.m. in the Highland Elementary School Parking Lot, Central Avenue and Barrette Street, Crookston. The event is open to the public. There is no fee, but freewill donations will be accepted to help support the Dietetics Club and the Highland School Playground Fund. The purpose of the event is to promote community wellness through physical activity. “Our goal is to involve as many people as possible—families and friends,” according to UMC student Angie Smedberg, chairperson for the event and member of the Dietetics Club. “We want to show that physical activity doesn’t have to be tedious. It can be a fun family event!” The five kilometer course will start at Highland and follow Central Avenue East and then back. The club will provide refreshments at the halfway mark and at the end. No awards will be given for the first person to cross the finish line. Rather, everyone who enters is eligible for door prizes to be given away at the end of the run. “This is to underscore that exercise doesn’t have to be a competition. It can be an inclusive activity that benefits everyone’s health. We want to encourage EVERYONE to take part, young or old,” says Smedberg. UMC Dietetics Club President Dyana Klubertanz adds, “This event is the largest project our club has put on so far. It will be interesting to see the outcome. I would like to personally thank the community of Crookston, especially all the wonderful sponsors for their donations and time. I hope we see many out there walking and enjoying the day.” The Dietetics Club would like to thank local sponsors, including the UMC SIFE/Management Club, Steve Geatz Insurance, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Nicholas Collections, Hardees, Subway, Cellular One, Montague’s Flower Shop, KROX 1260 AM, the Irishman’s Shanty, Minakwa Golf Club, Munn’s Jewelry, Bruun’s for Men, Drees, Riskey & Vallager CPAs, Pamida, Health South, Regional Septic, the Crookston National Guard Armory, and the Crookston Police Department.
