UMC to Host Equine Competition March 4, 5 The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will serve as the host for a riding competition March 4 and 5. The two-day event will be held at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north end of the campus. The competition begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4, and continues at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday March 5. The event is free and open to the public. Equestrian teams from Iowa State University, Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin--River Falls, University of Wisconsin--Madison, and South Dakota State University will compete with UMC’s team in the areas of hunt seat equitation and show jumping. These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA. This is the final competition in the regular season. UMC will host the IHSA regional competition on March 25. The high point teams from regional competition will move on to the “zone level” and then to the national competition held May 12-14 at Georgia Horse Park in Atlanta, Georgia. UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region. UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past four years. IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program. UMC is one of the few schools in the nation to provide such a specialized equine science program.
