1999 US News "Best College"UMC Ranked a US News
"Best College"

After just five years as a four-year baccalaureate institution the University of Minnesota, Crookston, (UMC) has been ranked as one of the best public regional universities in the Midwest.

UMC received this significant recognition based on the US News ranking process which included several measures of excellence. UMC was ranked third in regional public schools – Midwest regional liberal arts colleges.

One of the factors that led to the positive reputation of UMC is its leadership in the area of technology inclusion in the curriculum. Not only did US News rank UMC, it also featured the University’s Crookston Campus in its special feature on Best Colleges in 1999 article on High Tech Teaching. The magazine acknowledged UMC as the first college in the country to adopt the notebook computer for all students, a major curriculum innovation. UMC’s Chancellor Donald Sargeant is quoted in the article.

Since its beginning, UMC has had different missions first as a high school than as a two year college, and now as a baccalaureate college. In 1993 UMC became the first college in the nation to issue a notebook computer to all full-time students.

"This ranking speaks very well for UMC for the changes we’ve made, and now we’ve moved to the third spot in the region in terms of a ranking," said UMC Chancellor Donald Sargeant.

The indicators that U.S. News uses to capture the various dimensions of academic quality fall into seven broad categories: academic reputation; retention of students; faculty resources; student selectivity; financial resources; graduation rate performance, and alumni giving. UMC was honored out of a group of 429 similar institutions in the United States.
