Ag-Arama Set for January 29, 30

Ag-Arama, the annual winter competitive and fun event at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), will be held Friday and Saturday, January 29 and 30, at the University Teaching and Outreach Complex. The mech-ag-athon will be held January 23 in Owen Hall.

Ag-Arama provides students the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills in their individual interest areas. There are contests in horticulture, agriculture aviation, agronomy, soils, natural resources, mechanized agriculture and animal science showmanship.

Ag-Arama is planned by a committee of students and advised by a faculty member. This year's advisor is Larry Leake, Aviation program manager. Students are: Natalie Foltz of Callaway, chair; Kelli Rusch of Hutchinson and Lisa Detloff of Bertha, vice co-chairs; Holly Wildman of Brooten, secretary; and Renae Henderson of Glenwood, treasurer.

All of the Ag-Arama events during the day are open to the public, as well as to the UMC community, students and alumni.

Through Ag-Arama, students learn organizational skills by serving on committees. Ag-Arama gives students the opportunity to interact with each other and with faculty members through the various contests.

The schedule of events is as follows: Wednesday, January 27 through Friday the 29: mechanized agriculture. Friday, January 30: ag aviation, agronomy and horticulture contests on the UMC campus. Saturday is when all of the "fun" activities open to everyone are held. These include: three-legged race, broom-barrel race, match splitting, log chopping, cross-cut saw race, seed spitting contest, bat race, bale toss, cow milking contest, pole toss, tug-o-war, pie eating contest and other games. Other activities on Saturday include: animal science showmanship and ag industry show; natural resources contests; noon luncheon; coronation of Ag-Arama royalty; crop show; Ag-Arama finals and awards; a volleyball tournament and social for alumni.  For a full schedule of events, check the UMC Ag-Arama 1999 Web Page.

The event will end with an Ag-Arama dance at the Crookston National Guard Armory on Saturday, January 30, from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. There is a $5 cover charge, and a drivers license is required for 21 and above. For more information or to request disability accommodations call 218-281-8100.
