University of Minnesota, Crookston WordmarkHoliday Penny Drive Raises $367.76

UMC Students, Faculty and Staff contributed $367.76--mostly in pennies and other pocket change--to the Holiday Penny Drive sponsored by the UMC Student Ambassadors. The Ambassadors' goal was to "beat" last year's penny drive collection of $168.00, and the campus contributions more than doubled! All but $52.00 of this money came from students living in UMC's residence halls.Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Sister Justina from the Crookston Care and Share was thrilled with the gift when UMC student Jody Lundbohm, Melissa Chistofferson, and Kylee Johnson, presented the check to the Care and Share Center on the afternoon of December 18. The gift will allow the Care and Share the food purchasing power of over $3670. Ambassador advisor Laurie Wilson said, "I'm so proud of our students. It just goes to show that even little things can add up to great things in the end."

Ambassadors Sponsor Holiday Penny Drive

The UMC Student Ambassadors will once again set up their "Holiday Penny Drive" in the Sahlstrom Conference Center entrance from December 9-12 and 15-18, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each day. Funds collected will go to The Care and Share Center in Crookston to assist that organization in its important role as a shelter for homeless persons in our area.

Sister Justina's Care and Share Center has received national and state recognition for the quality of the services delivered to the people it serves, and has been a designated site for service learning experiences on the UMC campus. Last year, students and staff contributed $164.00--mostly in pennies--to the fund. That translates into food purchasing power for The Care and Share Center of more than $1600!

Dr. Michael Harrington, an economist concerned with the economics of poverty, stated that the majority of Americans are one serious illness or accident away from the reality of homelessness. If you haven't had the opportunity to reflect on the significance of that statement, this Holiday Season might be your opportunity to do so.

Join others on campus in contributing to this important work.
