Teleconference
at UMC October 30 "Legal Issues: Documentation And
Admissions"
What kind of documentation is needed by an adolescent or adult with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorders to gain admissions into an institution of higher education? What barriers do parents face when their adolescents are denied eligibility? What steps can these adolescents and adults take when they need accommodations in a post-secondary setting?
These are some of the questions that will be addressed in an upcoming series of satellite teleconferences, "Legal Insights" which will be down-linked to the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC).
On Thursday, October 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Hill 15, the teleconference will focus on "Documentation and Admissions." This teleconference will highlight eligibility, admissions and readmissions, documentation of disabilities and record-keeping.
Discussions are designed for a wide range of persons who work with and act as advocates for adolescents and adults with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders. Questions and comments from professionals, consumers and advocates throughout the country will also be answered via interactive telephone communications during the entire broadcast. Participants will have the opportunity to speak directly with the panel and viewing audience.
Panel members include legal experts Jeanne Kincaid, Salome Heyward and Jo Anne Simon. Kincaid specializes in disability law and is an adjunct faculty member of the University of New Hampshires Graduate School of Education where she teaches special education law. Heyward is an authority in discrimination law and serves as an expert resource for media. Simon, a founding member of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), is an expert on the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to higher education and licensing bodies.
Although the teleconference is open to everyone, those most interested might be persons involved with education of students with disabilities, parents, vocational rehabilitation counselors, attorneys and higher education disability service agencies.
There is no cost for the teleconference, but participants are asked to register and obtain a parking permit by calling 218-281-8681. Disability accommodations may also be requested at that number.
