University of Minnesota, Crookston WordmarkStanley Sahlstrom Receives UMC Equine Award

Stanley D. Sahlstrom, founding provost of the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), was presented a very special award at the NW Minnesota Equine Conference held recently on the Crookston Campus. The award was presented to Sahlstrom for exemplary service to the equine industry. This is the first University of Minnesota Crookston Equine Award presentation. Hereafter, the award will be presented to honor Sahlstrom’s long standing record of exemplary service.

UMC Chancellor Donald Sargeant reminisced during the presentation about the early days and Sahlstrom’s enthusiasm about establishing an equine program at the University. His particular interest in Morgan horses was noted.

The award is named the STAN award to commemorate the spirit, talent, attitude and neighborliness of Sahlstrom. In the future, the award will be presented to individuals who bring those same attributes to their service in support of the equine industry.

The conference brought 75 equine enthusiasts to UMC to learn about equine lameness, equine chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Melissa Hower, director of UMC’s equine program, moderated the program which included faculty from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine as speakers.
