Serving Students With Disabilities: What Families And Communities Need To Know is the subject of a satellite Town Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). The downlink will take place in UMC's Sahlstrom Conference Center AB.

The Town Meeting will look at ways families, educators and communities can work together to improve education for students with disabilities – and provide schools with the tools to assess what all children are learning. The discussion also will consider the recent amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which provided children with disabilities an education that meets their individual needs.

In this hour-long program, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley and his guests will address these questions:

• How can schools work effectively with families of students with disabilities?
• How can children with disabilities succeed in school?
• What are the best ways to ensure that students with disabilities are included in regular preschools and classrooms, school-to-work programs, and other activities of school life to prepare them for the working world?
• How does this help improve outcomes for all students? How can schools, teachers and parents get high expectations for all students?
• How can early intervention be strengthened to ensure that every child starts school ready to learn?
• What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and what does it mean for families, school and communities.

The Town Meeting is free and interactive. It is open to the public. Participants may call the toll-free number and ask questions or share experiences with the panelists.
