Are you a working adult in an entry-level professional and supervisory job? Would you like to update you business skills? If so the Bachelor of Applied Business through the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) is for you.

Management and Human Resource Practices will be offered on Mondays beginning in December through February 23, in Dowell Hall 202, from 6 to 9 p.m. at UMC. The class introduces students to a broad overview of human resource practices in organizations, as well as basic responsibilities of front line managers. Emphasis is on providing day-to-day leadership, including organizing work, motivating employees, delegating, coordinating and achieving results.

Human resource practices carried out at the front line include selection, induction and training of new employees; employee appraisal; handling grievances; and discipline; according to instructor Susan Brorson, professor in the management division and a former small business owner.

Brorson is an experienced trainer and educator, working with adult audiences including small business owners, entrepreneurs, corporate officers, women owned small businesses and University leaders. She has been honored by UMC for her teaching, is active in her community and is an authority on interactive communications.

There is no prerequisite for the course, but class size is limited to 25.

The course is the first in a series leading to a Bachelor of Applied Business degree. This new degree program with the U of M University College is education students can take to work. Degree requirements reflect a practical orientation, and courses are designed for working adults and others who seek a flexible business degree. All course work can be done at the Crookston Campus, and most courses soon can be taken using the computer and the internet.
