UMC Students Earn Regional Champion Status at SIFE Business Conference in Minneapolis A team of University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) students involved in Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) traveled to Minneapolis to present a program of projects to a panel of judges in the annual regional SIFE conference on April 7 and 8 . UMC’s team earned Regional Champion status and will advance to the 2003 SIFE U.S.A. National Exposition on May 11-13 in Kansas City, MO, to compete against other regional champion teams from across the country.This is the fourth straight year that UMC’s SIFE team has earned the title of SIFE Regional Champion. UMC is the only baccalaureate or four-year college in Minnesota to be able to make that claim.
The team gave a 30-minute oral presentation along with a multimedia production. They were judged based on their presentation, a written annual report, and a portfolio of service projects. Their project list consisted of a year-long program of educational and outreach activities including organizing the first annual Crookston Job Fair; the group’s annual craft show; advertising sales for the Minnesota Association of Community Theatres Festival, held in Crookston; personal finance workshops for regional high school students; and competing in the University of Arizona’s “Duel in the Desert,” among other projects. The presentation team consisted of Sara Ard of Champaign, IL, Megan Brorson of Crookston, Crystal Cook of Deer River, Mike Erickson of East Grand Forks, MN, Katherine Johnson of East Grand Forks, MN, Steve Kongsjord of Talmoon, MN, Scott Mack of Savage, MN, and Ryan Tripp of Alexandria, MN. The technical team consisted of James Lamb of Grand Forks , ND, and Justin Petrich of Crookston. Other SIFE members who attended the Minneapolis competition included Mike Burak of Battle Lake, MN, Keith Johnson of East Grand Forks, MN, Ben Perkins of New Brighton, MN, and Jay Tupa of Fargo, ND. Steve Shirley and Craig Silvernagel, two of the group’s three advisors, also attended.Other collegiate SIFE teams from throughout the Midwest attending the regional competition included St. Cloud State University, North Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Winona State University, Minot State University, Luther College, Augustana College, University of Northern Iowa, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Southwest State University.
