James Hersch to Bring Unique Musical Outreach Program to Crookston February 19 What makes nationally acclaimed singer-songwriter James Hersch unique is that when he performs, he performs for an entire community. Hersch will bring his unique musical outreach program to Crookston and UMC on Wednesday evening, February 19, with performance beginning at 7 p.m. in UMC’s Bede Ballroom. The event is free, and members of the Crookston community of all ages are encouraged to attend. Free refreshments will be available, and free transportation will be provided by T.H.E. Bus (call 281-5832). In preparation for his 7 p.m. performance, Hersch will perform three times during the day at different sites in Crookston. He is scheduled to perform at 8:15 a.m. at Washington Elementary School; at 10 a.m. for Head Start at the Family Services Center; and at 1:30 p.m. at the Oak Court Assisted Living Center. Several UMC students will accompany Hersch to the various community concerts during the day.Hersch’s performance at UMC is being sponsored in conjunction with National Civic Engagement Week (February 16-22), a week to increase, celebrate, and deepen the student civic engagement efforts on college campuses across the country. Driven by his passion for service learning, Hersch has become known for as an advocate for community service. He travels the country teaching college students the value of community outreach by working with students to present concerts that create interaction between students and their community. According to Hersch, these performances are geared to “help participants realize the importance of reaching outside of themselves to others.” They also provide inspiration for the evening performance, which will includes a video presentation of scenes from the day’s interactions. According to Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, UMC’s Director of Student Activities and Service Learning, “James Hersch’s performances are truly powerful. We are excited about bringing James back to Crookston.” Hersch has performed once before in Crookston in the spring of 2001. Hersch has been writing, singing, and playing his guitar nationwide for nearly 20 years. He began his outreach program in 1994. In recognition of his program, he received the Harry Chapin Award for Contributions to Humanity from the National Association for Campus Activities.
