Roger Wagner Receives UMC Distinguished Teaching Award Roger Wagner, associate professor of horticulture at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), was recently presented with the UMC Distinguished Teaching Award for 2002 at the college’s annual faculty and staff recognition day. UMC's Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1983 to recognize those members of the faculty who have made significant contributions to teaching and who have demonstrated high standards in instruction. Wagner has a distinguished 27-year career of teaching horticulture courses at UMC. He was cited for his service to students as an excellent teacher, advisor, and role model and for his “concern and guidance, not only about students’ academic performance and progress, but equally so in their growth as individuals and up-and-coming professionals in the field of horticulture.” Students and colleagues asked to comment on his effectiveness as a professor consistently commented on his professionalism, his knowledge of both the science and industry of horticulture, and the high expectations he holds for his students. Wagner has been a faculty member at UMC since 1975. He lives near Fisher, Minnesota The UMC Distinguished Teaching Award caps off a banner year of recognition for Wagner. In December of 2001 he received the Bronze Award from the Minnesota State Horticultural Society for making a remarkable contribution to horticulture, and in April of 2002 he was named one of only four faculty members from the entire University of Minnesota System to receive the John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.
