UMC SIFE Students to Compete at National Level

A team of University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) students involved in the campus Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter took home championship honors at the SIFE Regional Competition in Minneapolis on April 12.  The team will now advance to the national level competition held May 13-15 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Team members include (back row, l. to r.): Jeremy Busch of Alexandria, MN; Steve Brandt of Kimball, MN; Brent Massmann of Kimball, MN; James Lamb of Grand Forks, ND; Shane Roers of West Fargo, ND; Ryan Tripp of Alexandria, MN; Adviser Steve Shirley; (front row) John Bridgeford of Crookston, MN; Marnie Wirth of Munich, ND; Deborah Wosick of Minto, ND; Johanna Alcorn of Red Lake Falls, MN; Shon Naslund of Lake Park, MN; Jeff Horner of Minnedosa, MB, Canada; and James Guerrier of Miami, FL (not available for photo).

Judges awarded the UMC team championship honors based on a 30-minute audio-video presentation.  The students presented their annual report, a year-long program of educational and outreach activities.  Their project list included refining an eight-page coloring book, geared toward grades 1-3, that describes basic business principles of how a market-based economy operates; presenting seminars on managing financial matters to students at several high schools; spearheading a campus recycling project; taking part in lobbying efforts at the Minnesota State Capitol; and sponsoring a community business social networking event.

UMC’s team competed against other collegiate SIFE chapters from throughout the region including Kansas State University and Minot State University.

Steven Shirley, the team’s adviser and a marketing instructor at UMC, says, “The students have put in a great deal of time and energy throughout the year.  Taking regional champion honors is a nice way to have their efforts rewarded.  SIFE is a terrific global organization, and it's great to see our program competing at the highest levels.  Management instructor Eric Burgess, also actively involved with the UMC SIFE Chapter, adds, “Our students have once again demonstrated their commitment to excellence by winning the Regionals.  I am looking forward to watching them compete and win the Kansas City competition.”

This is the second consecutive year UMC's SIFE team has advanced to national competition.

SIFE is a nonprofit organization that gives students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation.  The organization consists of chapters on more than 700 college campuses worldwide.
