UMC to Host Rural Development Policy Dialogue April 11

UMC will host a dialogue on rural development policy issues on Wednesday, April 11, in Sahlstrom Conference Center, rooms A and B.  The objectives of the dialogue are to discuss rural development initiatives currently underway and to identify possible rural development projects that involve collaborative work among various agencies and organizations.  

G. Edward Schuh, Chair of the Minnesota Rural Development Council and Director of the Freeman Center for International Economic Policy, will be the featured speaker.  University of Minnesota Regent Robert Bergland, formerly the U.S. Secretary for Agriculture in the Carter Administration, and Charles “Chuck” Casey, Dean of the University of Minnesota Extension Service, will also attend.  Other members of the Minnesota Rural Development Council and representatives from several foundations dedicated to rural economic development are also scheduled to attend.  Local and regional civic and organizational leaders from northwest Minnesota are welcome.  For more information or to RSVP, please contact Judy Neppel via phone at 218-281-8343 or via e-mail at jneppel@mail.crk.umn.edu

10 a.m. – Welcome

10:20-11a.m. -- Panel discussion on rural development issues
Panelists include U of M Regent Bob Bergland and G. Edward Schuh, Chair of the Minnesota Rural Development Council and Director of the Freeman Center for International Economic Policy

11 a.m.-Noon -- Panel discussion on what has and hasn’t worked in terms of leadership, community, and rural development
Panelists include John Kostichek, Otto Bremer Foundation; John Ostrem, Northwest Minnesota Foundation; and a representative from the Blandin Foundation

1 p.m. -- Presentation "Technology in Rural Development"
by Jerry Nagle, President, Northern Great Plains Inc.

1:20-1:40 p.m. -- Presentation "The Role of Natural Resources in Economic Development"
by Dan Svedarsky, UMC Professor of Natural Resources

1:40-2:00 p.m. -- Presentation "Using Grower Alliances in Rural Development”
by Brent Sorenson, Northern Great Plains Initiative Vice President for Agri-Industry

2-2:30 p.m. -- Presentation "Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships"
by Barbara Muesing, UMC Director of Outreach and Linda Kingery, Executive Director, Northwest Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnership

2:20-3:00 p.m. -- Small Group Discussion
Groups will discuss partnerships in regard to rural economic development and future prospects for collaborative efforts. 

3:00 p.m. -- Small Group Discussion Reports

3:30 p.m. -- Closing
