UMC to Host Horse Clinic March 23, IHSA Western Show March 24The Equine Industries Management Program at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will sponsor a horse clinic Friday, March 23. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena on the north edge of the campus. John Hovde, a rancher and professional horseman from western North Dakota, will lead the clinic. The clinic is open to the general public at a cost of $20 per person. Individuals interested in reserving a space for the clinic should contact Bobbi Bingeman, publicity coordinator for the event, by calling 218-281-8913 or via e-mail at ubjb201@mail.crk.umn.edu. Tickets may be sold at the door, depending on available seating. The clinic will address horsemanship, communication, psychology, and problem solving. As attendees look on, Hovde will directly coach 10-15 horses and their trainers from UMC and the region. Hovde will focus on the importance of listening to the horse and communicating via body language the horse can understand. He will also present groundwork concepts for horses and horsemen at all stages of learning. The clinic will feature “finished” horses, along with “green-broke” horses and horses that have never been ridden. (see flyer for more info.) The horse clinic begins a weekend of equine-related activities at UMC. On Saturday, March 24, UMC will host an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Western Riding Show. The competition will begin at 1 p.m. in the UTOC Arena, and will continue at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 25. The event is free and open to the public. Concessions will be available, and disability accommodations can be made by calling 218-281-8109.For more information visit the UMC Horseman's Association web page or the UMC IHSA Team web page. |
