UMC To Host Farmland Wildlife Management Seminar Nov. 28

Dr. Alfred Berner, a noted expert on pheasant and farmland deer management, will present an overview of farmland wildlife management practices in Minnesota as part of the Farmland Wildlife Management Seminar at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) on Tuesday, November 28.

The Farmland Wildlife Management Seminar will be held at UMC in Owen Hall, Room 205, on Tuesday, November 28, from 4-9 pm.  The registration fee is $65.  For more information or to register, contact UMC’s Center for Continuing Education at 218-281-8681 or e-mail hbertsch@mail.crk.umn.edu .

The seminar will emphasize white-tailed deer and pheasant populations and include practical habitat management practices that are compatible with conventional farming operations, the impact of farm programs and the cost-sharing opportunities available.

Dr. Berner recently retired as the director of the Farmland Wildlife Management Center of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and has been an advisor to national policy discussions related to how farm programs affect wildlife populations.

“As the Group Leader of the Farmland Wildlife Population and Research Group, Dr. Berner helped provide information needed to manage major wildlife species in Minnesota's farmland zone, comprised of all or parts of 74 counties and totaling almost 49,000 square miles,” states Dan Svedarsky, UMC’s Natural Resources Program Manager.   “You’ll learn the real deal on farmland wildlife issues in the Northern Great Plains.”

The group’s responsibilities include coordinating and interpreting population surveys; conducting research to gather information on wildlife management; developing techniques needed to monitor and manipulate wildlife populations, manage critical wildlife habitats to reduce or prevent wildlife damage; and evaluating management practices and programs.

Participants can request .5 credits from the University of Minnesota, Crookston or .4 CEU’s to apply to professional continuing education requirements upon completion of this seminar.
