UMC Crops Team Places at National Competition

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Crops Judging Team ranked in the top two in many categories at the National Invitational Collegiate Crops Contest, held April 20, 2001, at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  The team consisted of UMC students (pictured below from left) Martin Hochhalter, Kevin Jacobson, Charlie Stein, Justin Knott, with advisor Charles "Chuck" Habstritt, associate professor of agronomy at UMC.

The team took home the following honors:  First place in the Agronomic Quiz; second place in Crop and Weed Identification; second place in Lab Practical (includes judging seed samples and identifying insects, diseases, and machinery); and second place in Math Practical (includes calculations for acreage and chemical and fertilizer application rates).  The team finished second overall nationally after facing competitors from Kansas State University, Iowa State, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Northwest Missouri State, and Cal Poly Pomona, among others.

Hochhalter, a senior at UMC, is from Ashley, ND.  Jacobson is a sophomore from Fullerton, ND.  Knott hails from Red Lake Falls and is a senior.  Stein is a senior from Lakota, ND.  All members of the team are agronomy majors at UMC.
