UMC Featured in Educational Technology Magazine

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) is featured in the December 2000 issue of Converge Magazine, a national educational technology publication.  The focus of the feature, entitled “ThinkPad U: The E-volution of Education at UMC,” is on UMC’s integration of notebook computers into its day-to-day curriculum.

In the article Dan Lim, director of UMC’s Instructional Technology Center, discusses four critical paradigm shifts experienced in the eight years of technology immersion at UMC.  He also presents data from research he has conducted to document the utility and value of technology on campus.  His data suggests UMC’s notebook computer initiative has increased students’ social interaction and learning. 

The article also features comments from UMC Chancellor Don Sargeant on his vision for the campus and from Cameron Brauer, a sophomore from Ellendale, North Dakota, who is majoring in Information Networking Management at UMC.

Converge Magazine is a monthly educational technology magazine.  It is published by e.Republic, Inc.  The article is available online at, www.convergemag.com.

UMC began issuing notebook computers to all students and faculty in September of 1993.  Since that time, representatives from more than 150 colleges and universities from across the world have visited the campus to tour its facilities and observe its technology rich environment.  More information about UMC’s technology initiative is available at the college’s website www.crk.umn.edu.
