U of M President to Visit Northwest Minnesota

President Mark Yudof will be in Northwest Minnesota on
Thursday, August 14, to view flood damages and see the
role the University has had during the flood and the
recovery process. Others traveling with Yudof include: Commissioner of Agriculture Gene Hugoson; U of M Regents Julie Bleyhl and Warren Larson, U of M Vice President Agricultural Policy Mike Martin; U of M Extension Service Dean Kathy Fennelly; Mary Vogel, College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture; and Dick Hemmingsen, State Relations. Yudof's planned schedule for the day is listed below: |
Thursday, August 14
9:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. - Ada, West Main
Pizza
Extension educators will talk about well water testing, impact of
the flood on agriculture, and use of moisture meters. School
officials will talk about the impact of the flood on the school.
The group will tour the Norman County Fairgrounds and 4-H
Building, the new site of the Ada School which was destroyed
during the flood.
12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. - University of
Minnesota, Crookston (UMC)
Luncheon with UMC and Agricultural Experiment Station staff and
local leaders. Remarks by President Yudof. Yudof will also view a
presentation of the UMC-Extension laptop computer project.
2:00 to 4:00 p.m. - East Grand Forks Senior
High School
Presentation about Extension Helping Hands. Yudof will be
involved in the closing ceremony. The day will end with a driving
tour of the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks area to view flood
recovery efforts.
Mark Yudof, former executive vice president and provost of the University of Texas at Austin, became the 14th president of the University of Minnesota on July 1, succeeding Nils Hasselmo. Yudof, 52, has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He served for 10 years as dean of the University of Texas School of Law before becoming executive vice president and provost. In that post, he initiated many improvements in undergraduate education at the Austin campus, including an extensive revision of undergraduate advising, an Academy of Distinguished Teachers to reward outstanding teachers, and a program aimed at giving all entering freshmen a small-class experience.
Yudof is about midway through his planned visits to 30 Minnesota cities by the end of September in an effort to learn more about the state.
