UMC Campus Policy on Smoking

The University recognizes the need to create and maintain an environmental quality which sustains and enhances the general health and well-being of its faculty, staff, students, and visitors. As part of a continuing effort to meet its commitment in this area, the UMC Campus Assembly at its 10/30/91 meeting adopted a revised policy which establishes new standards for the creation of a smoke-free environment. Consistent with the spirit and intent of this policy, should irreconcilable conflicts arise between individuals who choose to smoke and those who do not, the rights of nonsmokers will prevail.

Policy Guidelines

Smoking will not be permitted in any indoor areas.

The only exception to this policy is private residential space located in Lee Apartments and Robertson Hall (2004-05 only). Effective August 30, 2005 all University residence halls and apartments will be designated non-smoking. Student lounge areas are not exempt from this policy and are designated as no smoking areas.

Smoking is permitted outdoors. Smokers who choose to smoke outside are requested to ensure the proper disposal of smoking materials.

Designated No Smoking Areas

A No Smoking Area has been designated outside the exits from Dowell and Dowell Annex that overlook the children's play yard for the Early Childhood Development Center. The reason for this designation is that young children are very impressionable and smoking next to the play area does not set a very good example.

Implementation

This policy is to be implemented by units/departments in the same manner as other University Policies. Noncompliance should be handled in accordance with the University's disciplinary procedures.

Sale of Tobacco Products on Campus

The sale of cigarettes or other tobacco products in campus buildings/facilities shall be prohibited.

Assistance to Smokers

UMC shall continue to provide assistance with smoking cessation services to all faculty, staff, and students. The Student Health Service will continue to serve as a resource for inquiries, provide information, and offer smoking cessation classes at no cost to the individual.
