At long last it appears spring may be here. I’m sure some warmer weather, melting snow and green grass will lift everyone’s spirits. It’s just in time as we all look forward to graduation.
Activities Create Buzz
The campus community has hosted many groups over the past few weeks. Some include Business Activities Day, River Watch, Career Day with the Crookston Area Chamber, the Women’s Health Fair and the Home Grown Economy Conference. All provide the opportunity for students to learn more about the University of Minnesota, Crookston and at the same time extend the knowledge and resources of the campus to the region. Thanks to all the faculty and staff who provide leadership for these programs.
On Wednesday evening, April 2, the International dinner series held its final event. All four dinners were very well attended by students, faculty and staff and members of the Crookston community. International students did a great job providing entertainment and information about their home country. Dining Services staff prepared and served a variety of foods for everyone to experience. Many thanks are due to Study Abroad Coordinator Rae French and the international students for planning and hosting the dinners. Thanks also, to Associate Music and Theater Professor George French for providing musical support for the dinners.
Campus Celebrations
I continue to hear positive comments about the Stan and Pat Alseth gift announcement to the U of M, Crookston. This gift will have a lasting impact on campus. I want to express appreciation to Director Corby Kemmer and staff members Rose Ulseth and Sue Dwyer from the Office of Development & Alumni Relations and Director Krista Lemos and staff members Elizabeth Tollefson and John Zak from University Relations for the great job they did with the public celebration and announcement of the gift.
Also congratulations go to Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team members for winning the regional competition for the ninth straight year. They will compete in the national competition in Chicago in May. Thanks to Business Department faculty members Eric Burgess and Kenneth Johnson for their leadership of the SIFE team.
We look forward to celebrating more accomplishments and achievements of students at the U of M, Crookston on April 10 at the Student Awards Ceremony. The event begins at 7 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.
Change in Food Service Operations
Last Friday, April 4, the University announced the vendors who are being recommended for Board of Regents approval for food and beverage services on all University campuses. The Crookston campus is recommending that the Regents accept the proposal from Sodexo to manage and provide dining services on campus.
This decision is the result of an extensive process over several months. I am confident that the contract and partnership with Sodexo is responsible and fiscally sound and that it will help meet the campus community’s expectations and provide an exceptional student experience. For more background details, please refer to the frequently asked questions and answers available online.
Around Campus

University Relations – Now you can search the U of M, Crookston and Golden Eagle Athletics Web sites faster and more effectively. The E-Communications Web team along with Technology Support Services have worked together to make the Web site “search” function even better. We now have more control of results for keyword searches by setting “key matches” (promotion of specific Web pages) and pointing visitors to “related queries” (associated alternative words or phrases with specified search terms). We can also use filters and remove old URL’s that might still be indexed. Another new feature of our search is that you can choose to search other U of M campuses without leaving our site. Thank you for your patience as we will be working now through the end of the summer to make our Web pages more search-engine friendly and help you find needed information.
Student Thomas Ohmacht (ohmac050@umn.edu) recently joined the Web team. He will be working with Web intern Tyler Derosier under the direction of E-Communications Manager Amber Bailey (albailey@umn.edu) to maintain and enhance the Web site. Help us keep the Web pages current by sending suggestions and letting us know when you run into problems on the site.
