The Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) established itself on campus

1991-1992
The Atrium and its connecting walkways were constructed.

1993
University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) dedicated. Addition completed in 2000.

UMC begins offering baccalaureate degrees

UMC becomes the original “Laptop U” UMC has provided a portable notebook or "laptop" computer and network access to each and every full-time student and faculty member

1994
AURI moved into new offices in the Owen Hall Annex

1994
UMC's first bachelor of science degrees are awarded at commencement ceremonies.

Regents of the University of Minnesota sold five acres of land adjacent to the UMC campus to the city for the purposes of creating a "business incubator park."

Production Horticulture Facility was constructed over the fall and winter

1997
Dedication of the Sahlstrom Conference Center in honor of Dr. Stanley D. Sahlstrom, UMC’s founding provost and former University Regent.

Construction on the Controlled Environmental Science Building began with groundbreaking ceremonies on May 23, 1997

Construction begins on Westside Apartments

1998
Construction begins on Valley Technology Park

1999
UMC names first inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame

1999
The Northwest Experiment Station changed its name to become the Northwest Research & Outreach Center.

One of the bays in the Owen Addition was remodeled to create the UMC Student One-Stop Service Center.

Groundbreaking for the UMC’s Early Childhood Building

UMC joins the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference

UMC is named by U.S. News and World Report “Best College” for the first time

Dedication of the Harris Peterson Gazebo on June 24

Yahoo! Internet Life Online ranked UMC the number 1 "Most Wired College in America" in its category

Dedication of the Early Childhood Building

Wall Street Journal calls UMC "The College of the Future--Today" in special section on technology and education that includesa full-page feature on UMC appearing in the Monday, March 12, edition.

2003
Velmer S. Burton, Ph.D. named third chief officer of UMC. Inauguration was held October 17.

UMC received the Pioneer Award at the Fourth Annual Conference on Ubiquitous Computing

2003
UMC abandoned its original open enrollment policy in favor of more traditional enrollment standards.

2003
The Controlled Environmental Science Building was dedicated as the Bergland Laboratory on October 17, 2003. Named after Robert Bergland former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under President Carter and Regent of the University of Minnesota.

2004
Upon Chancellor Burton’s resignation, Joseph Massey, Ph.D. is named Chief Executive Officer of UMC.
