Board of Regents Votes Unanimously to Fund Residence Hall at UMC

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents this week unanimously approved a new 84-bed residence hall at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). “The Regents are investing in UMC and its future,” said Richard Nelson, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, “ this exciting project is another example of UMC’s commitment to excellence for its students, and a vote of confidence from the Board of Regents.”

The residence hall at UMC, dubbed Centennial hall, is appropriately named since the campus kicked off its centennial celebration in June. The project follows the construction of a new student center that opened in June and will be dedicated this fall. A groundbreaking will take place this summer for the new residence hall and occupancy will take place in the summer of 2006.

UMC Will Kick-off Centennial Celebration at NWSA Reunion

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will kick off a yearlong celebration of its centennial at the Northwest School of Agriculture (NWSA) reunion on June 24 & 25 on the UMC campus. “The Northwest School reunion is the perfect place to kick off this celebration of our history,” said Mike Meyer, chair of the centennial steering committee. “The Northwest School helped bring education to northwest Minnesota and fulfill the University of Minnesota’s land grant mission.”

The reunion begins on Friday afternoon with alumni registration. The new student center will be host for the activities of the reunion including the dedication of Bede ballroom. The room is named for Retta Bede, an instructor on the campus from 1925 until 1957. Recently, UMC used the Bede name on its student center. That building was razed in 2004 and a new student center stands in its place. Representing the family at the dedication of the ballroom will be Retta’s niece, Virginia Thirlkel.

The official Web site of the centennial is located at www.umcrookston.edu/centennial and includes a video history of the campus. Other reunion events include an alumni social and dance on Friday evening and a full day of special events on Saturday concluding with an alumni recognition banquet and program.

UMC Centennial Logo Unveiled

Crookston, MN (3/30/05)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) unveiled its centennial logo at student convocation on March 30 in Kiehle auditorium on the UMC campus. The logo was introduced in a video chronicling the history of the campus and concluding with the unveiling of the logo. As part of the occasion, everyone in attendance was presented with a pin that bears the centennial logo and a bookmark highlighting the historical events in the history of the campus.

“Our goal was to honor our roots and recognize the history of the Northwest School of Agriculture, acknowledge our close tie with the University of Minnesota, and show that we are the University of Minnesota, Crookston and will be for the next 100 years. I think through the use of the imagery from the NWSA logo, the traditional maroon and gold colors and our featured logo in the middle we have accomplished a logo that will accomplish all of those goals as well as be easy to reproduce and recognizable as we move through the centennial,” said Mike Meyer, Director of Development & Alumni Relations and chair of the centennial committee.

The unveiling of the logo is the inaugural event in the centennial celebration. The official kick-off will take place this summer at the Northwest School of Agriculture Reunion on June 24 & 25 and continue through commencement exercises in May 2006. Highlights planned for the centennial include the dedication of Centennial Park, the opening and dedication of the new student center, and many other special events.

“This is a great opportunity for us to recognize the contributions that UMC has made to this region and state,” Joe Massey, CEO of the Crookston campus, stated. “The events surrounding the centennial recognize our pioneering efforts in education and research that have had such an impact on Minnesota and the world. We are looking at this as an opportunity to recognize those pioneers and showcase the great things planned for our next 100 years.”
