Muscoplat will discuss biotechnology and genetically modified organisms or GMOs.  During his day-long visit, Muscoplat will also tour the Northwest Research and Outreach Center, adjacent to the UMC campus, and he will visit with UMC students and faculty.

On February 24, UMC officials signed a cooperative agreement with the U of M, Twin Cities.  Under the terms of the new partnership, students at UMC will now be able to enroll in the Agricultural Education programs offered by the University of Minnesota Division of Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Education (AFEE) based on the St. Paul campus.  Through a combination of on-site and distance-delivered courses, students may remain on the Crookston campus while completing their degree.

UMC Chancellor Don Sargeant, Richard Nelson, Director of UMC’s Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Roland Peterson, Head of the Division of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Education on the St. Paul Campus, all signed the agreement.  Former UMC Provost and U of M Regent Stanley Sahlstrom was also present.  He congratulated all those involved for working together to offer more options to U of M students.

Open Mic Night with Ellis
Do you have a hidden talent?  Can you sing, play an instrument, dance the jig, or lip sink to LFO’s “Girl On TV?”  If so, do whatever you have to do to sign up.  Run, scream, tear down the walls to sign up at the Bede Info Desk.  Leave your name(s), description of your act, and what technical support, if any, you need.

The curtain goes up, the lights turn on, and the crowd goes wild at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2nd.  There are prizes for groups that place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.  Don’t wait; go now.  Hope to see you all at Open Mic Night with Ellis!  Direct any questions to urjo002.  Sponsored by S.P.A.C.E.

Faculty/Staff Accolades

  • Dan Svedarsky, professor of Natural Resources at UMC, recently received the prestigious Minnesota Award of the Minnesota Chapter of The Wildlife Society at their annual meeting in St. Cloud.  The Wildlife Society is the organization of wildlife researchers, managers, and professors and the award recognizes “outstanding contributions to the profession of wildlife management in Minnesota.”

In announcing the award, Bill Berg, of the Chapter’s Awards Committee noted, “Few natural resource professionals in Minnesota have done so much for both the resource and the profession.  Equally as important, few have been so considerate of students and peers.  ‘Dr. Dan’ is very deserving of our Chapter’s 1999 Minnesota Award.”

  • Mark Huglen was named Coach of the Year after leading his Golden Eagles to an MCHA title in the inaugural season of MCHA play.  UMC finished the regular MCHA season with a 10-0 record and finished the season with a 20-5-2 overall record.  In Huglen’s four years at the held for UMC, his career record stands at 65-34-6.
