UMC Theater to Perform Comedy "Bless Me Father"
The UMC Music-Theater Department will perform the comedy “Bless Me Father” February 18, 19, and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and February 20 at 3 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.  Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.  Special reduced-price advance tickets are available from the cast and members of the UMC Choir.  The funds will be used for the upcoming choir trip to Los Angeles.

This farce, written by Craig Alpaugh, takes place in Holy Family Rectory, where Fathers Richard and Charles preside.  The chaos begins when Father Charles mistakenly learns that Father Richard is planning to leave the priesthood and get married.  In reality, the lady in question happens to be Father Richard’s sister, Susan, who wants Father Richard to marry her—that is, to preside over the marriage ceremony to her fiancé Ira.

One-Man Juke Box Eric E. to Perform
Eric E. will perform on Wednesday, February 23, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Brown Dining Room.  A concert with Eric E. is unique because he asks the audience to create its own concert play list.  Audience members simply yell out any year of the last eight decades and Eric plays them a hit song from that year.  At a recent college performance, the audience was up dancing during 90 percent of the show.  The performance is free.

Eric will be on the INSIGHT radio program on Saturday morning, February 19, and will talk a little bit about his style of entertainment.

MATHCOUNTS Set for February 25
Seventh and eighth grade students from approximately fifteen schools across northwestern Minnesota will participate in this year’s MATHCOUNTS on Friday, February 25, in Bede Ballroom.  Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with the full competition set to begin at 9 a.m.  Awards will be announced at 1:30 p.m.

MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide math program, is both a coaching program and a series of competitions at regional, state, and national levels.  Area students who made their school math team will compete against “mathletes” from other schools.  The winners from the day’s competition will advance to state competition in March.

Student Service Fee Survey Results
The complete results of the recently completed Student Service Fee Survey can be accessed at:  http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/~nelson/surveys/feesrvy0.htm.

Thanks to the 236 students who completed the survey!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
UROP application material for projects to be conducted between June 19, 2000 to June 15, 2001 is now available in the Academic Affairs Office.  The hourly rate to use in determining the stipend is $10.21.  Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on March 6, 2000 (late applications will not be accepted).  UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member.  UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project.  It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects.  UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student.  Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

Fast and Easy Cooking
Several students have expressed a desire to learn basic cooking skills.  In response to this request, Dining Services will offer a cooking demonstration every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Morsels lounge.  All products used will be sold at a 10 percent discount for the week.

Safety Training
On February 22 and 23, Safety Meetings will be held at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center, Youngquist Auditorium.  Safety meetings will consist of Employee Right to Know Refresher trainer and Fire Safety/Emergency Awareness.  Also, Forklift and Skid Steer training will be done for those involved in using that type of equipment.  Scheduling times and more details will follow later.

Open Mic Night with Ellis
Do you have any hidden talents?  If so, we have good news for you.  UMC’s second Open Mic Night of the year is coming up soon.  It will be even a bigger hit this time with a special performance by Ellis, a female singer/songwriter.

At this time the S.P.A.C.E. Board is looking for talent hopefuls.  We want you; we need you.  If you would like to perform in front of an audience and show what you can do, now is your time.  There is no better time than the present to make it big.  Please sign up today at the Bede Information Desk.  There will be a sheet at the desk to put your name(s) and brief description of your act.

Open Mic Night will be on Thursday, March 2nd.  The exact time in the evening has not yet been set.  It will take place in the Eagles Roost (Morsels).  Please direct any questions to (urjo002) or (ukjj002).  There will be 1st – 3rd place prizes for the “top” performers!  This event is sponsored by the S.P.A.C.E. Committee, entertaining UMC since 1970.

Thank You
I recently received a note of thanks from Johnny Schwengler and Barbara Gordon, Barry Schwengler’s father and stepmother.  They extended a sincere thank you for all the information about the memorial service.  They hope to come to UMC in April to get a tour of the campus and attend a baseball game.
