UMC is AATP Site
The INM department will be offering the Microsoft Authorized Training Provider program this spring semester that allows academic institutions to deliver training on Microsoft networking to their students. The offering will be available to students as an individual study course. The training helps prepare students for industry recognized certification for system engineers. UMC is the AATP site. Materials and curriculum are designed and authorized for the Microsoft Certified Professional Program.

Student Success Fair
On Wednesday, January 26th, we will host our 6th Annual Student Success Fair somewhere in the vicinity of Morsels and the Sahlstrom Conference Center entrance. The Student Success Fair is intended to bring together representatives of the components of academic success (study skills, good health, support services, clubs and organizations, nutrition, goal setting/decision making, AODAP, good use of resources, spiritual development, planning skills, etc.) to remind and encourage students to get off to a strong start as the new semester begins. Participants may develop booths with information, games, prizes, quizzes, event sign-up sheets, or other presentations of interest to students. Please notify Laurie Wilson if you plan to participate. New ideas are welcomed!

Hours for the event are from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with set-up beginning at 9 a.m. The theme for this year is "Sink or Swim," and we will be organizing around that theme whenever possible. Participants are responsible for gathering their own equipment and materials for their booths and for any prizes which they might wish to offer.

Siegle to Speak
In conjunction with the Student Success Fair, we are hosting a speaker, Judy Siegle from Merit Care Hospital in Fargo. Her January 26th evening dinner topic will be "Living a Life that Matters." She will speak from about 5:30 to 6 p.m. and will then be available for questions and answers. Ms. Siegle is a successful professional on staff at Merit Care as a social worker, but she is also a highly competitive wheelchair athlete whose life was changed in an accident a few days before she was to begin her college life at Concordia. We believe that this presentation would be appropriate for student leaders (club and organizations officers, team captains, students who are on academic probation or suspension, RA staff, or anyone who may need a boost or a reminder about the importance of what they put into life.)

We hope that you will all help us to encourage student, faculty and staff participation in both events. Your involvement would be welcomed!

To all University of Minnesota Faculty and Staff:
An award recognizing faculty and staff who have provided exceptional service to the University was established in 1997 and is presented during the spring. Called the President's Award for Outstanding Service, this award honors active or retired faculty or staff members who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community. Nominations for this award are due by February 28, 2000.

Nominators must be current members of the University of Minnesota faculty or staff or alumni of the University. Nomination letters should focus on the nominator's personal knowledge of the nominee's exceptional service, such as innovative service to students, the University community,

individual units of the University, or outreach beyond the University.

Nominations should be submitted to:

President's Award Committee
c/o Vickie Courtney
University Senate Office
427 Morrill Hall

Please see the following description of the award and nomination requirements. Call the University Senate Office at (612) 625-9369 for any questions you might have.

I urge you to bring forward nominations so that more individuals providing outstanding service to the University will receive well-earned recognition, and the University will continue to be a leader in setting our community's standards of excellence.

PRESIDENT'S AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE

This award recognizes exceptional service to the University, its schools, colleges, departments and service units by any active or retired member of the faculty or staff. Such service must have gone well beyond the regular duties of a faculty or a staff member, and demonstrate unusual commitment to the University community.

A nomination for a President's Award for Outstanding Service should be submitted to the President's Award Committee. The following format is to be used:

Nominee (must be an active or retired member of the University faculty or staff).

Nominator (must be an alumnus or alumna of the University or a current member of the faculty or staff).

Letter from nominator - should focus on personal knowledge of the nominee's exceptional service, i.e., innovative service to students, the University community (broadly interpreted), individual units of the University, or outreach beyond the University.

Supporting letters - three (in addition to the letter of nomination) from the nominee's peers in and outside the University; again these should focus on personal knowledge as above.

Number of copies - eight (8)

Date of Submission - February 28, 2000.

NOTE: Persons writing letters of nomination should know that such letters will be legally available to the nominee upon request, even to an unsuccessful candidate who becomes aware of the nomination. Nominators should also make sure that writers of supporting letters are aware that their letters, too, will be available on request.

The President's Award Committee, appointed by the President, recommends candidates for this award to the President. I will have final authority to grant the award, which does not require action by the Senate All-University Honors Committee or approval by the Board of Regents.

No disclosure is to be made to the nominee while his or her name is under consideration.
--Mark G. Yudof, President

Thank You
Myra and I wish to thank you for making our retirement party such a memorable occasion. It was good of you to take time to make the day special through your gifts and well-wishes. It's hard to believe that the years have gone by so very quickly, but it also feels good to contemplate the events yet to occur.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with each of you, and I wish you a very successful and Happy New Year.
--Richard and Myra Christenson
