MORSELS-UPDATE/UPGRADE

Morsels will be making a few drastic changes for the 1999-2000 academic year. The store will be expanding its selection of items. The short order grill will be moved upstairs to Brown. A few of you may wonder what in the world are we doing?

The convenience store will now truly become a convenience store. The students will have a larger grocery section. Household items will be stocked such as mixing bowls, can openers, pots and pans. Morsels will continue to offer prepared food. These will be pan pizzas, nachos, pretzels, cold sandwiches, and hot dogs. Cold breakfast items such as individual bags of cereal, milk, fresh fruit, bottled juices, toast, English muffins, bagels, and assorted pastries will be available.

Brown Dining's second line will feature the short order. The majority of the food will be centrally located. More selections will be offered in one area. The deli line will now become self-service. Bet you're wondering what will happen to the stir fry and egg line? These items will still be added to the weekly menu. The Tuesday taco salad and Wednesday pasta special will also be a standard on the menu.

Hours of operation will change slightly. Cold breakfast will be offered in Morsels beginning at 7 a.m. Hot breakfast will be in Brown 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Short order line will be open 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., lunch on first line will be 11a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Short order will open 4 to 6 p.m. and supper will be 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. Morsel hours will be 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6:15 to 9 p m.

These changes are drastic and will be difficult for some people to accept. Meal plans are voluntary this academic year and student needs are changing. Dining Services is making an attempt to meet the student needs. Please be patient and let's work together to make this transition effective and

efficient for everyone. Grand Opening promotions will be offered. Once the operations have been operating for a few weeks your input and suggestions would be welcome.

Brown Dining Room

Brown will be going through some drastic changes over the month of September especially during the lunch hours. Brown Dining room has several meeting rooms, which are utilized during meal times. The upcoming changes may or may not affect seating during lunch. Dining Services will observe seating needs for a month to obtain an approximate estimate of long term seating needs. Your cooperation will be appreciated.

CAMPUS NETWORK AND SOFTWARE CHANGES

We are replacing our Novell servers with Microsoft NT servers this summer as the last phase in a multi-year upgrade.

As a result, your campus login will change somewhat as we switch from Novell to Microsoft networking. NT allows us to provide a more integrated environment and better web services.

Desktop (non-mobile) users will be visited by Computing Services staff during the latter half of July to upgrade their desktop software in preparation for the server swap out. Installs of Office 2000 will be done at the same time.

Old server MAILX, our old email server on which you had your F: and Z: drives, failed in the last two weeks and has been pulled from service early. Server "Muskie" currently provides those services, but it will go offline around the 1st of August.

A replacement server for the webhome.crk.umn.edu/~homepages is being set up now, and will take over homepage service on or about August 1. URLs that use the word "muskie" will fail at that time, URLs that use the word "webhome" will continue as before. As before, your web page will be mapped to drive W:.

Your userid and e-mail address will remain unchanged, most of this transition will not be very obvious to you, as a user.

Notebook users will receive the changes throughout August as part of the reload process.

Please contact the Helpdesk to schedule your visit.

--Don Medal
