Regent Spence is
Commencement Speaker
U of M Regent Patricia Spence will address the graduates at
Commencement exercises at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21, on the campus mall (Lysaker Gymnasium in
case of rain). Regent Spence is vice chair of the Board of Regents. She is a homemaker and
former mayor of Little Falls. She earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics
from the University of Minnesota. She has taught school, co-directed a U.S. Department of
Education project for rural youth, owned and managed a retail business, and served as
Morrison County economic development director. She was elected to three terms as mayor and
has provided leadership to many educational and governmental boards, including the
Minnesota Supreme Court Board of Continuing Legal Education, the Minnesota Higher
Education Coordinator Board, and the Central Minnesota Initiative Fund.

"U Can Count on US" Celebration
It's a week away
mark your calendars!
"U Can Count on US" Celebration, Thursday, May 27th,
2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with a Potluck following from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
This celebration serves a dual purpose, to recognize and show
appreciation for our Civil Service and Bargaining Unit employees as well as recognize our
faculty, staff and P&A employees for outstanding service. We encourage you to come and
join the festivities.
If you're interested in joining the chorus, we meet again today (May 20)
at 3:30 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium.

UMC and ICC Sign Articulation Agreement
UMC and Itasca Community College (ICC) campus administrators and
program faculty were on hand recently in Grand Rapids to make official an articulation
agreement between the two colleges. Under the agreement, students in ICC's two-year
Natural Resources-Forestry program may now transfer to UMC and earn a bachelor of science
degree in Natural Resources.
Attending the articulation agreement signing from UMC were Donald
Sargeant, chancellor; Richard Nelson, chair of the Center for Agriculture and Natural
Resources; and Dan Svedarsky, professor of Natural Resources.

1999-2000 Faculty/Staff Fund
Drive
As of Monday, May 17, 34 faculty and staff have made a financial
commitment of $14,388 as part of the 1999-2000 Annual Fund Drive. Your continued support
is very much appreciated. If you haven't made your gift this year, please send it to the
Development Office, UTOC.

University Auditors
A reminder that the University Auditors will be on campus until
May 28th. The audit will potentially include an assessment of activity in all
UMC CUFS areas. Jim McDonnel will be the Audit Manager on this project, and Kelly Kuhns
will be the lead auditor. They will be assisted by various others from the Audit
Department. Selvig 305 will be provided to them during the two weeks that they are on
campus.

Faculty and Staff Accolades
- Congratulations to Marilyn Grave and George French on their
respective promotions to Associate Professor effective July 1. The promotions were
approved by the University of Minnesota Board of Regents at their May meeting.
- Congratulations to Phil Baird who received the 1999 President's
Award for Outstanding Service. Phil will be honored at a reception at Eastcliff on June 2.
