Change in Parking Policy - Permit Parking to be Allowed on the
Mall
In consideration of the Early
Childhood Development Center Construction project and the
effect it is having on the available parking on campus,
the following change in the parking policy will be
effective on Monday, May 3rd:
Permit parking will be allowed on the
mall during the construction period (May 3, 1999 until
December 1999 or such time that parking spaces have been
restored). The following rules apply to parking on the
mall:
- A valid "all lots"
permit is required.
- Signage will be placed on the mall
to indicate where permit parking is allowed.
- Mall parking will be restricted to
the right lane.
- Parking on the mall will be
prohibited from 1:00 am - 7:00 am.
If you have questions concerning this
change, please let me know.

Free Nicotrol Patches
HealthSystem Minnesota is
coordinating a "Patch Project" for the
Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (MPAAT)
in which a 6 week supply of Nicotrol patches are to be
distributed free to those Minnesotans wanting to stop
smoking. Student Health was able to get 30 kits, each of
which contains a 6 week supply of the patches, an
audiotape, and a Taking Action pamphlet. In accordance
with the agreement, priority will be given to those
people whose insurance does not cover patch expenses.
A Stop Smoking Workshop will be
presented by Jane Croeker, Polk County Public Health, on Thursday,
May 13th, from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
(room TBA). Following the workshop, the patches will be
distributed for you to use when you make your decision to
stop smoking. Those receiving patches will be asked to
fill out a very shot questionnaire. Also, a few points to
consider for various reasons, the patch is not as
effective for those who use chewing tobacco; and the
patch is more effective for those who smoke at least 1/2
a pack of cigarettes per day. The patches are for anyone
students, faculty, and staff.

Outstanding Community Service Award
UMC is pleased to announce a
University Outstanding Community Service Award to honor
community outreach and community service activities of
faculty, staff, and members of the greater University
community. This award recognizes outstanding
contributions and accomplishments of faculty, staff, or
community members who have devoted their time and talent
to make substantial enduring contributions to the
community and to improving public life and the well-being
of society. Such contributions and accomplishments must
result in long-term and lasting changing for the public
good and demonstrate an unusual commitment to the
University and the greater Minnesota community.
Awards to faculty and staff are not
intended to recognize service provided to a professional
association nor to recognize other service normally seen
as part of their responsibility as an employee of UMC.
Rather, it is intended to emphasize the importance of
community service and to recognize the importance of the
outreach role of faculty and staff. The award given to
the faculty or staff member chosen will also recognize
the agency or group(s) with which the recipient of the
award is affiliated. A community member who would receive
the award will have made a significant public service or
outreach contribution in the name of UMC. Nominations
must be made by Friday, May 7th.
Any person or group may make a
nomination. The award criteria include:
- Evidence of solid accomplishments
in the area of public policy and public service
that contribute to the quality of life at the
local, regional, state, national, or
international level;
- Contributions should result in
long-term and lasting changes for the public
good; and
- Demonstrated commitment to the
University and the greater Minnesota Community.
Please send your nomination to me by
Friday, May 7th. The recipient will be honored
at the UMC "U Can Count on US" Celebration on
Thursday, May 27th.

Wall of Books
The greatness of the University
of Minnesota is in large part due to the scholarship and
quality research of our faculty. The Heritage Gallery at
the new University of Minnesota Gateway Alumni and
Visitors Center should reflect this great publishing
tradition by representing the enormous productivity of
our faculty.
How will this be done? Through the Wall
of Books. You can help by contributing copies of your
books to be part of this great legacy.
The 2,600 square foot Heritage Gallery
at the University of Minnesota Gateway will showcase many
of the people, products, and ideas spawned by our great
institution, its faculty and alumni. A highlight of the
gallery will be a dramatic wall of books Ñ60 feet long
and 35 feet high at its peak. Well-used, well-respected,
and well-loved books will line the wall to a height of
eight feet, and faux books will reach to the ceiling.
We need your help to collect 5,000
books for the Heritage Gallery. Please encourage faculty
and staff participation by the deadline of June 4, 1999.
For criteria, check your e-mail from
Chancellor Sargeant.
