Background Information: On May
5, 1862 an army of French forces was defeated by the

Relay for Life
What: Relay for
Life is a unique, challenging, and fun way to raise money
for the American Cancer Society in our community, and to
raise awareness that people do survive cancer, and how
the American Cancer Society helps that to happen.
When: July 9-10, 1999, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
(Friday evening-Saturday morning)
Where: University of Minnesota, Crookston
Campus Mall
How: Teams of 8-12 people collect donations
before the event. During the Relay, at least one team
member is walking around the track at all times. There is
a community party atmosphere with lots of food,
entertainment and a luminary lighting ceremony.
Who: Anyone who wants to fight cancer and
have a fun time with friends and co-workers.
Why: The Relay for Life is as much a
cancer awareness-raiser as it is a fund-raiser. Some of
the participants are cancer survivors themselves. Their
involvement is proof of the progress that has been made
not only in cancer cure rates, but also in the quality of
life following cancer treatment.
I have been asked to put together a
team for this event. A team consists of 8 to 15 people.
Although some of the evening will be spent walking, you
will also have the opportunity to participate in various
activities and enjoy the company of friends and
co-workers. Music will be playing throughout the night. I
sincerely hope that we (UMC) will be able to participate.
Contact Stacey, 8512, by May 14th,
if you are interested. Thank you.
--Stacey Grunewald
