NCAA Institutional Self-study Committee Named
As a new member of the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) UMC is required to
conduct a comprehensive self-study of its intercollegiate
athletic programs. The self-study will cover:
institutional purpose and athletics philosophy; the
authority of the chief executive officer in personnel and
financial affairs; athletics organization and
administration; finances; personnel; sports programs;
recruiting, admissions and eligibility policies; and
services for, and a profile of, student-athletes. The
purposes of the self-study are three-fold: (1) to
sensitize top administrators and key campus
constituencies to major types of problems that commonly
occur in intercollegiate athletic programs; (2) to
identify specific areas that may represent potential
problems and to develop written plans for the improvement
of these areas; and (3) to guide institutions toward
review of documentation to support selected areas of the
study, and as necessary, implement actions that might
prevent or minimize the severity of identified problems.
Members of the committee appointed by
Chancellor Don Sargeant are: Bob Nelson, Student Affairs
(Chairperson); Marv Bachmeier, Athletics; Heidi
Patterson, Financial Aid; Val Uttermark, Registrar's
Office; Bob Johnson, Vern Markey, Sonia Spaeth, Twyla
Treanor, Steve Shirley, faculty representatives; John
Mitchell, athletic compliance; Stephanie Reck, women's
athletics representative; and Jody Lundbohm and Randy
Lee, student athlete representatives.

"Virtual"
Job Fair
The UMC Career Center's
"Virtual" Job Fair will continue for the rest
of 1999. Presently we have 46 companies registered and
this number continues to grow each day. Two hundred
seventy (270) students have placed their resumes on line
with the Career Center and this list is also growing on a
daily basis. Many students using these services have
found excellent full-time, part-time, seasonal and
internship positions. The system is very user friendly
and anyone needing help can stop by the Career Center.
Our goal by the end of 1999 is to have 100 employers on
line and 60 to 70% of our students registered with the
Career Center. Students can register with Don or Meloni
in the Counseling and Career Center, in Bede Hall, room
106.
