Rural Options
University of Minnesota
Extension Educators from all parts of Minnesota met
recently to develop programs to respond to the challenges
facing rural families and communities. Several UMC
faculty and staff participated. The Rural Options
Conference was sponsored by the University of Minnesota
Extension Service as a staff training for educators
working with farm families who are experiencing the
effects o the farm crisis. In the Red River Valley the
crisis is largely associated with crop production.

Sexual
Assault Prevention Task
Force
In April of 1998, the UMC
Campus Community and the Violence Intervention Project
co-organized our first "Take Back the Night"
(TBTN) March and Rally to highlight the reality of
sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse in our
culture. Prior to the TBTN rally, the UMC Sexual Assault
Prevention Task Force sponsored monthly events that
featured speakers, videos, "The Clothesline
Project," residence hall programming and a variety
of other events to educate our campus community about
these significant issues.
During the 1998-99 school year, the
Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force resolved to continue
to educate with monthly programs featuring a variety of
formats. We have done that and have plans for the
remainder of the year that will once again culminate in
the Second Annual Take Back the Night March and Rally
on Thursday, April 29 beginning at 7 p.m. We hope that
you will mark your calendars and plan to join us in
speaking out against the violence that hurts us all.
Watch for details about coming
programs: "No Witness" a courtroom drama
schedule for February 9 and 10 in Kiehle Auditorium and
staged by our own UMC Music and Theater Department, and a
St. Patrick's Day event entitled "Sex, Intimacy and
the College Student" (or "Just 'Cause We're
Dating, It Don't Mean We're Mating") featuring Bob
Hall, a nationally recognized college speaker.
The next meeting of the UMC Sexual
Assault Prevention Task Force is scheduled for Friday,
February 12, 11 a.m., in Hill 15. Contact Gary Willhite,
committee chair, for details.

Free Lunch
Pat Martin is the lucky winner

participated in a short web survey on Service-Learning. A
special thank you goes out to Bob Nelson for assisting
with the survey. If you want to learn more about Service
Learning or have a service-learning project idea, please
e-mail me at nfiorini.
