VIDEO
PRESENTATION OF "SLIM
HOPES"
Back by demand, "Slim Hopes," the video featuring
Jean Kilbourne, award-winning creator of "Still Killing Us
Softly," offers an in-depth analysis of how female bodies
are depicted in advertising imagery and the devastating effects
of that imagery on women's health. Addressing the relationship
between these images and the obsession of girls and women with
dieting and thinness, "Slim Hopes" offers a new way to
think about life-threatening eating disorders such as anorexia
and bulimia, as well as well-documented critical perspectives on
the social impact of advertising.
View the video and have coffee and cookies with
us. The video will be shown at 12 noon and again at 3 p.m. on
Tuesday, December 9, in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131. It is 30
minutes in length. The video presentation is sponsored by the UMC
Commission on Women.

UMC's ATHLETIC COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT RECOGNIZED
UMC's Athletic Community Building Project for 1996-97 was
given the "Innovations in Student Development Award" by
the Minnesota College Personnel Association during their annual
meeting at the Earle Brown Continuing Education Center on the
University of Minnesota, St. Paul campus.
This "best practices" award is
designed to facilitate the sharing of new ideas and show
appreciation for the work of colleagues on various campuses. The
UMC Community Building Project Team membership included Don
Cavalier, Tim Harrison, Stacey Grunewald, Marv Bachmeier, Laurie
Wilson, and all the athletic coaches at UMC. The goals of the
project were to discuss athletes as leaders in the university
setting first as students and role models and second as athletes.
Other issues that were presented during the project were
Athletics and Classroom Success, Winning on Two Fronts, Physical
and Mental Conditioning, Confronting the Realities of Diversity,
Athletics and Lifelong Planning, Chemical and Substance Use and
