CHAIR FOR RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHED AT UMC
A $1 million Chair for Rural Economic Development was
established at UMC by the Dr. Frank W. Veden Charitable Trust.
The announcement was made by Ken Broin, retired vice president at
First Bank in Minneapolis and lead trustee of the Veden Trust.
The $500,000 gift from the Veden Trust will be
matched with permanent University funds of $500,000 to support
the $1 million chair. This is the first chair to be established
at the Crookston Campus. Funds earned would generate about
$55,000 a year that could be used to support the chair at UMC.

SEARCH COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS
Al Larson has submitted his resignation effective January 31,
1998. We thank Al for his dedicated service to UMC for the past
decade, and we wish he and Kay the best. Also, as you know Dr.
Knowlton had agreed to serve as our vice chancellor for Academic
Affairs for this academic year.
Thus, shortly I will be appointing two search
committees (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Director of
External Relations). Please forward nominations for either or
both search committees.

RETHINKING CHRISTMAS FEST
I have been visiting with faculty, staff and members of the
Christmas Fest Planning Committee about rethinking how UMC
handles its holiday banquet. Attendance over the past few years
has been lower each subsequent year. I'm unsure whether this is
due to the many holiday and family commitments that we all have
in December or to some other reason. There has been talk about
having a simple hors d'oeuvres reception/get-together for faculty
and staff before Christmas. This would take the place of the
semi-formal evening banquet/program/dance.
We could then have a New Year banquet/dance in early to mid-January. This would find most people's calendars a little less hectic. This could also help refocus our energies for the New Year, restate our ties to the UMC community, and psyche us all up after the post-holiday blues. (Plus, we wouldn't have to sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas!")
What are YOUR thoughts on this? Please send
your opinions to asvec@mail.crk.umn.edu.
