CHAIR FOR RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHED AT UMC
A $1 million Chair for Rural Economic Development was established at UMC by the Dr. Frank W. Veden Charitable Trust. The announcement was made by Ken Broin, retired vice president at First Bank in Minneapolis and lead trustee of the Veden Trust.

The $500,000 gift from the Veden Trust will be matched with permanent University funds of $500,000 to support the $1 million chair. This is the first chair to be established at the Crookston Campus. Funds earned would generate about $55,000 a year that could be used to support the chair at UMC.

SEARCH COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS
Al Larson has submitted his resignation effective January 31, 1998. We thank Al for his dedicated service to UMC for the past decade, and we wish he and Kay the best. Also, as you know Dr. Knowlton had agreed to serve as our vice chancellor for Academic Affairs for this academic year.

Thus, shortly I will be appointing two search committees (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Director of External Relations). Please forward nominations for either or both search committees.
--Donald Sargeant

TEN SECONDS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
"Ten Seconds Can Change Your Life" will be presented by Bobbie Petrocelli at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6, in Bede Ballroom. Petrocelli is brought back to UMC by popular demand. His life-changing story is one of personal triumph, instilling hope and courage in listeners. The community is invited to come and listen to one man tell his story how another individual’s alcohol use affected his life and the changes those events brought about. Petrocelli is brought to UMC by the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program.
--Tim Harrison

UMC’s Music/Theater Department will present the 2-act comedy "Fast Girls" in Kiehle Auditorium Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday November 7-10 at 7:30 p.m. except for Sunday when the show is at 3 p.m. The all UMC student cast includes Jane Hoesly from Ladysmith, WI; Darci Delage from Brooks; Mike Swartz from Pisek, ND; Tamilee Nennich from Bagley; and Jeremy Ferguson from Petersburg, ND.

"Fast Girls-Cheap Tickets" are available at the Bede Information Desk for $2 adults and 50 cents students. Please encourage students to experience live theater at UMC. Thanks.
--George French

SPIRIT OF DOVES
Violence Intervention Project will display their "spirit of doves" project Monday, November 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bede Lounge. The display includes shirts and personal items decorated by victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, child sexual abuse and child abuse. A survivor will share her story at noon.

RETHINKING CHRISTMAS FEST
I have been visiting with faculty, staff and members of the Christmas Fest Planning Committee about rethinking how UMC handles its holiday banquet. Attendance over the past few years has been lower each subsequent year. I'm unsure whether this is due to the many holiday and family commitments that we all have in December or to some other reason. There has been talk about having a simple hors d'oeuvres reception/get-together for faculty and staff before Christmas. This would take the place of the semi-formal evening banquet/program/dance.

We could then have a New Year banquet/dance in early to mid-January. This would find most people's calendars a little less hectic. This could also help refocus our energies for the New Year, restate our ties to the UMC community, and psyche us all up after the post-holiday blues. (Plus, we wouldn't have to sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas!")

What are YOUR thoughts on this? Please send your opinions to asvec@mail.crk.umn.edu.
--Andrew Svec
