A public reception for the new U of M President Mark Yudof
and Judy is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, from 5 to 6 p.m.
in Bede Ballroom. All faculty and staff are invited. There is no
charge.

surrounding Torch and Shield Day, next Wednesday, October 29. Please

COMMUNITY
CAMPAIGN
Our annual community fundraising campaign is underway for the
1998 year. By now, a UMC volunteer/captain should have given all
employees the campaign information envelope. As of Friday,
October 17th, we have reached 24% of our United Way
goal for this year's campaign. Thanks to all of you who have
responded. A reminder to everyone to please forward the pledge
form back to the Business Office even if you choose to make no
contribution to this year's campaign. All pledges should be
turned in by the end of October. Thanks again to all of you.

NEW AAU PRESIDENT NAMED
Nils Hasselmo, former president of the University of
Minnesota, has accepted appointment as the next president of the
Association of American Universities. Hasselmo will assume the
post July 1, 1998.

MULTICULTURAL/INTERNATIONAL CLUB TO MEXICO
UMCs Multicultural/International Club is organizing a
trip to Mexico. As a fundraiser we are putting on a
"BINGO" Party in Brown Dining Room this Thursday,
October 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $2 a card. It's going to
be a lot of fun and there will be many prizes that were donated
by the community. If you have any questions or you need special
accommodations, please contact me at 8573.

Photo and Wood sales will be in the SCC Lobby from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, October 27 and 28. Check it out.

GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Foundation is seeking
nominees for scholarships to be given to students who have
outstanding science potential and intend to pursue a career in
mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. UMC may nominate
up to four sophomores/juniors for the $7500 annual scholarships.
Please send the names of outstanding science students to me.

MAGICIAN AT UMC
Magician Gary Tyson will be at UMC Tuesday, October 28, at
11:45 a.m. in Morsels. There is no charge. He will also have a
table available of magic items for sale.

FLU SHOT CLINICS
Polk County Nursing will be on campus providing flu shots
again this year. There will be two separate clinics--one for UMC
employees and one for students. The clinic for UMC employees is
Friday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in Sahlstrom
Conference Center 131, and will cost $8 per shot. The UMC student
clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. in SCC 131 and will be free. Call me at 8512 if you have
questions.

HAUNTED HOUSE AT UMC
Are you looking for an exciting Halloween experience? Try
UMCs Haunted House from 8 to 11 p.m., Wednesday, October
29, and Friday, October 31, in Bede Ballroom. The cost is $1 for
non-UMC students. Funds raised will go to the Violence
Intervention Project.

BAIRDS
CLASS RECEIVED AWARD
Phil Baird's collaborative distance education class in
Wilderness Management (with Wayne Freimund, U of Montana,
Missoula) has received the UCEA (University Continuing Education
Association) Region VII Outstanding Credit Program of the Year
Award. The application was submitted by Wendy Ninteman, Natural
Resources Continuing Education, U of Montana, and focused on the
"electronic aspects" of course development and delivery
with UMC.
The formal announcement will come on October 24 in Portland, Oregon at the UCEA convention. Wendy wrote today saying: "Everyone here ... is very pleased - it's quite an honor to receive this award, and ... much of the credit goes to you folks at Crookston. It's so nice to be partnering with such an innovative group."

International (PSI) Club Bosses Breakfast. He was nominated by
