ROSH HASHANAH and YOM KIPPUR
Jewish Holidays of ROSH HASHANAH and YOM KIPPUR October 2 (begins sundown October 1) – October 11, 1997 (1 Tishri – 10 Tishri 5758)

The Jewish High Holy Days are observed during the 10 day period between the first day (Rosh Hashanah) and the tenth day (Yom Kippur) of Tishri, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the most important of all Jewish Holidays and the only holidays that are purely religious.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated the first and second days of Tishri. It is a time of family gatherings, special meals and sweet tasting foods. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn day of the Jewish year and is observed on the tenth day of Tishri. It is a day of fasting, reflection and prayers.

PHYSICIAN AT STUDENT HEALTH
Student Health is pleased to announce that every Wednesday, starting October 8, there will be a physician from the Altru Clinic - Crookston Branch, at Student Health, 111 Bede, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Students are strongly encouraged to call Stacey at 8512 to make an appointment or if they have any questions. The student's insurance company will be billed for a regular office visit if evaluated by the physician.

BAND PRACTICE IN HAFSLO CHURCH
Band practice has moved from the Kiehle Auditorium stage to the basement of Hafslo Church to eliminate the inconvenience of a noisy instrumental ensemble disrupting activities in the library and faculty/staff offices in the Kiehle Building. If anybody has a fairly clean carpet remnant which can be placed on the floor in that area, which my workstudy students have cleaned up, please let me know. It needs to be small enough to be rolled up in the spring because the space is subject to some flooding when the snow melts.
--George French

IMMUNIZATION CLINIC
Polk County Nursing will be on campus Monday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in SCC 131 providing booster shots for Tetanus, Diphtheria (Td) and Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR). The shots are FREE for students; all others will be charged $4 per shot.

MUSIC THEORY
This year, for the first time, I am teaching music theory to seven very dedicated student musicians. Our new piano lab is an indispensable tool for this class since we don't have practice rooms. I still plan to propose a music minor on this campus for students pursuing a baccalaureate degree and interested in developing skills to teach piano lessons, play church organ, direct church/community choirs, etc. Student interest seems to be high. The courses involved with such a program also appeal to post-secondary high school students. Please feel free to share your ideas, positive or negative, about this idea.

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to observe a student who has never been involved with music enroll in class piano and, after several weeks, learn how to play a tune with both hands! I sincerely thank the faculty/staff for forwarding to me names of students who have an interest in music/theater so I can make some contacts.
--George French

GARRISON KEILLOR AT CHESTER FRITZ
Garrison Keillor and Roland Flint will be at the Chester Fritz on Sunday, November 2, at 7 p.m. If you are interested in attending, please call Kellee Thingelstad at 8586 by Friday, October 10. Thanks.
--Pam Holsinger-Fuchs

FAST GIRLS
The two-act comedy "Fast Girls" will be produced in Kiehle Auditorium, November 7 through 10. Student actors Jane Hoesly, Darci Delage, Tim Millner, Tamilee Nennich, and Jeremy Ferguson along with supporting crew will present an entertaining performance. We are planning a February play and a spring musical (perhaps "My Fair Lady").
--George French

FLU SHOT CLINICS
Polk County Nursing will be on campus providing flu shots again this year. There will be two separate clinics--one for students, and one for UMC employees. Friday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in SCC 131, is for UMC employees only and will cost $8 per shot. Tuesday, November 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in SCC 131, is for students only and will be FREE. Call me at 8512 if you have questions.

CHOIR TO NEW YORK
The 28 students in the choir are excited about our proposed performing trip to New York City in February. Again this year, we will travel with the Northland Community College choir under the direction of Les Torgerson. The ensemble will perform at three high schools, North Hennepin Community College, and an Episcopal Church near Times Square. The choir continues to rehearse in the Hafslo Chapel Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12 noon.

THANK YOU
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended my retirement reception last spring, contributed to my gift, and helped to make it a very special day. Dining Services … you did a superb job. I'd like to extend a special thank you to all of the staff of the Northwest Experiment Station.

FROM AN ELDERHOSTELER
"I had a dream ... that I would go to an Elderhostel and find that it deals with a subject with which I am genuinely concerned. It doesn’t just skim the surface but delves into it so that one must really study, really apply oneself, to grasp the material. This dream was realized at UMC. The program was what I had hoped for, but didn’t dare expect. The teachers ... Dave Kuehn, Robbie McGurran, and Barbara Ricord, conducted the program in a professional manner for a professional group. UMC is on the crest of a rapidly growing wave."
--Al Bleckman, 1997 Elderhosteler
