REGENTS AT UMC
The University of Minnesota Board of Regents will meet at UMC on Thursday and Friday, September 11 and 12. All sessions are open. Please feel free to sit in on any meetings. SAHLSTROM CONFERENCE CENTER
The official naming of the UMC Conference Center as the Sahlstrom Conference Center, in lasting tribute to Stanley D. Sahlstrom, UMC’s founding provost and University Regent, will take place Thursday, September 11, 10:30 a.m. Reception, 11:30 a.m. Program on the UMC Mall. All faculty and staff are invited.

ED WIDSETH FIELD
The football field will officially be named the Ed Widseth Field in lasting tribute to Edwin Widseth, Northwest School of Agriculture ’32, All-American, All-Pro (MVP 1938) and College Football Hall of Fame recipient on Saturday, September 13, 1 p.m. at the entrance to the Ed Widseth Field. All faculty and staff are invited.

TECHNOLOGY PARTNERSHIP FUND (TPF)
Minnesota Technology, Inc. through its Technology Partnership Fund is making up to $100,000 available to companies who partner with faculty members in Minnesota who are on "late-stage R&D of a new product." TPF links smaller companies with faculty and facilities at Minnesota’s universities and colleges. They are seeking faculty with expertise or interest and will then attempt to pair them with a company. If you would like any additional information or detail, please contact me as I have this available in my office.

GOLDEN EAGLES CALENDAR
Golden Eagles Calendars are now available for purchase. This year’s calendar is dedicated to former chancellor and Regent Stan Sahlstrom. It includes the entire UMC and Crookston High School athletic schedules for the 1997-98 school year. Calendars are available at the White House Alumni Center for $25 each. Drawing will be held with $20 prizes each day of the school year; $100 on the last Friday of each month; and $500 at UMC Homecoming and Teambackers Fun Night.

CHAMBER WELCOME PICNIC
All faculty and staff are invited to the annual Chamber of Commerce Welcome Picnic, which will be held Sunday, September 7, at 5 p.m. on the Mall. In case of rain it will be held in Brown Dining Room. The picnic is sponsored by the Crookston Chamber of Commerce and the Crookston Retail Merchants Association. It is free to all UMC students, faculty and staff. Family members are welcome at their own expense.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES GRANT FUNDED
UMC has received official confirmation from the U.S. Department of Education that our Student Support Services grant application has been funded. The grant is in the amount of $180,000 a year for four years.

The project will provide counseling, faculty and peer tutoring and mentoring, and academic and supportive services to low income, first generation and disabled students in order to increase their retention and graduation rates.

Project staff will consist of a Director (100%), two Counselors/Advisers (100%), an Administrative Assistant (50%), a Math/Science Instructor (50%/9-months), an English/Writing Instructor (20%/9-months), a Reading Instructor (20%/9-months), and ten Student Tutors/Mentors. Finalists for the director’s position were interviewed on campus the last two weeks in August and will begin employment on, or as soon after, September 1st as possible. Applications for the counselor/adviser positions closed on August 15th.

UMC Insight will be aired Saturday, September 6, at 8:45 a.m. on KROX (AM 1260). Tune in this week to hear "A New Year (Dedications, Regents visit, etc.)" with Chancellor Donald Sargeant.
