KIEHLE HALL RENOVATION
The State Designer Selection Board recently selected the firm of Widseth Smith Nolting
& Associates, Inc. of Crookston to provide professional services for the renovation of
Kiehle Hall. A recent legislative action funded this project for planning funds with
construction funding to be requested in the 2000 Legislative Session. This project will
renovate the building and is not necessarily considered as an historic preservation or
restoration of the building, even though some portions may be preserved or restored. An
addition is under consideration for the housing of the UMC Alumni Foundation and other
areas.
In September, the firm will schedule a series of meetings with the project team from
UMC. The UMC Project Team consists of Jeff Sinks, Owen Williams, George French, Pam
Holsinger-Fuchs, Dean McCleary, Kent Freberg, and Curt Almlie. Any comments or questions
can be addressed to me.
--Curt Almlie
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Members of the construction committee for the new Early Childhood Development Center have
had a busy summer visiting various facilities, including the U of M Twin Cites Child Care
Center and a new Kindergarten Center in Fargo (designed by one of our architects). The
initial plans and drawings have been prepared in hopes of presenting the information to
the Regents at their September Meeting. The architects, Amanda Torgerson and David Schults
from YHR Partners in Moorhead have been very helpful and responsive, and the committee is
hoping to receive bids in January or February with construction to begin Summer or Fall of
1999. The new building will incorporate some features that fit well with the northwest
corner of the campus.

There will be a Chancellors Reception following Convocation.
Orientation 98 will continue for new students throughout the evening of September

UMC RECEIVES ITS FIRST GOLDEN EAGLE
Since 1996 the official mascot name for the Crookston campus has been the Golden Eagles
but only recently did the campus receive a bona fide specimen of one. Doug Sandstrom, a
UMC grad and current Minnesota Conservation Officer, helped remedy that deficiency. It is
illegal for private citizens to possess protected birds, especially eagles, and through
Dougs contacts with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a confiscated bird was
permanently loaned to the Wildlife Museum of the Natural Resources Department.

SEMESTERS ARE COMING!
Work is currently underway for a special half-day semester conversion workshop for
students and faculty this fall. The featured activity will be meetings between advisers
and advisees to insure that everyone is on track for UMC's conversion to semesters in Fall
1999. A new semester course catalog will be available, as will special individualized
Academic Progress Audit System (APAS ) reports for continuing students, that will show how
quarter courses will apply toward fulfilling semester degree requirements. Students are
encouraged to pick-up a copy of the currently available Semester Transition Student
Handbook when school begins if they have not already done so. The Handbook is
available at the Office of the Registrar and other locations across campus.
