I am pleased to announce that Doug Knowlton has accepted the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs position. His background, personal skills and leadership will serve UMC well. He is a great addition to our faculty and administration.

PUBLISHER FAIR
The Publisher Fair that the UMC Bookstore and the Technology Working Group are sponsoring is today, Thursday, April 30. A group of publisher representatives are on campus to demonstrate, in particular, computer software and CD ROM instructional materials. The following publishers are planning to come:

  1. St. Martin's Press, Bedford, Freeman, Worth, VHPS (Scott Wagner will demonstrate some text materials)
  2. Jim Ertl representing Harcourt Brace, HoltReinhart, Saunders, Dryden Press
  3. Dan Suckert representing International Thomson Publishing
  4. Kevin Carlson representing Addison Wesley, Longman, Benjamin Cummings
  5. Roxanne Woods representing Allyn & Bacon, Simon & Schuster Higher Ed Group

The publisher representatives will be in Bede Lounge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to discuss and demonstrate materials they have available. Everyone is invited to stop and look.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Don’t forget the Fly In & Drive In Pancake Breakfast this Sunday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crookston Municipal Airport. Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for children.

SEMESTER TRANSITION WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS
Workshops to inform students on semester transition issues have now been scheduled. Transition students are students who are attending UMC under the quarter system and will attend UMC under the semester system. The workshops will answer some common questions about semesters, introduce students to new transition tools, explain options available to students to complete either quarter or semester requirements, and provide tips to make for a smooth transition.

Workshop sessions are scheduled for: Tuesday, May 5th at 12 noon; Thursday, May 7th at 3 and 5 p.m.; and on Friday, May 8th at 9 a.m. All sessions will be held in Dowell 115.

Dr. Nancy Barcelo, associate vice president for Minority Affairs is the keynote speaker for the "Cinco de Mayo" celebration, on May 5, 1998 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. Everyone is cordially invited.

TIME TO CELEBRATE! ANNUAL FACULTY AND STAFF BANQUET SET FOR MAY 15
All members of the UMC community, along with spouse or guest, are invited to attend the annual UMC Faculty and Staff Banquet. The banquet is set for Friday, May 15, at the Crookston Eagles Club. The social is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The annual recognition, awards, and entertainment ceremonies will follow the dinner.

Tickets will be $8 per person and will feature a choice of chicken dinner or Swiss steak dinner. Tickets may be purchased at the Business Office in Selvig Hall, starting May 1. The deadline to purchase tickets will be Wednesday, May 13, at noon.

We hope to see you all there. This is a great time to celebrate a year of accomplishments and to have fun with this great group of people we know as the "UMC Community."

BEDDING PLANTS FOR SALE
The UMC Horticulture department and club will have their annual bedding plant sale Wednesday, May 13, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Bring your University I.D. for admittance. Thursday, May 14th the sale will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sale will be at the Horticulture Production Greenhouses across from parking lot A. There will be a good selection of geraniums, annuals, hanging baskets and vegetable plants to choose from. See you at the sale!

FACULTY/STAFF ANNUAL FUND DRIVE
The annual Faculty/Staff Fund Drive packets for 1998-99 have been mailed to all UMC personnel on this campus. If you did not receive a packet or you have questions, please give me a cal at extension 8438. In appreciation for your support, the Development Office will hold a Thank You Tailgate Party on Tuesday, May 19, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot behind the White House.

RICHARD NELSON REVIEW
Arlyss Grosz will chair the 3-year comprehensive review for Richard Nelson, and David Hoff and Bob Nelson have been appointed members of the committee. They will be conducting the review under the guidelines established by the Office of Human Resources.

TECHNOLOGY ENHANCED LEARNING AWARDS
Congratulations to Ken Myers and Arlyss Grosz for winning Awards for Innovation in Technology Enhanced Learning from the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost office. The awards include a $3,000 stipend, and they will be presented the awards by President Yudof at a reception and technology conference and exhibit on May 20, 1998. Vern Markey's work also received special recognition with a $300 stipend. UMC is certainly proud of their work and their recognition.

SAHLSTROM RECEIVES UMC EQUINE AWARD
Stanley Sahlstrom, founding provost of UMC was presented the first University of Minnesota Crookston Equine Award presentation at the NW MN equine conference. The award is named the STAN award to commemorate the spirit, talent, attitude and neighborliness of Sahlstrom. In the future, the award will be presented to individuals who bring those same attributes to their service in support of the equine industry.

The conference brought 75 equine enthusiasts to UMC to learn about equine lameness, equine chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Melissa Hower-Moritz, director of UMC’s equine program, moderated the program which included faculty from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine as speakers.

THANKS
Thanks to all those who participated in the April Blood Drive. A total of 42 people volunteered to donate, and 41 were able to give blood! Fourteen of the donors gave for the first time. Thank you so much for your continued support with this important event.
