ALMLIE APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF UMC INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS
Curt Almlie has been appointed director of Institutional Relations and will begin work March 16. We are pleased that Curt is returning to UMC to provide leadership to our marketing and institutional relations programs. He brings an exceptional background in public service and in education to the campus. As director of Institutional Relations, Curt’s primary responsibilities will be in marketing UMC. He will also lead, coordinate, evaluate and participate in alumni relations, media and governmental relations, University relations, development, community relations, advertising, and promoting campus programs and activities.

FRANCE TOPIC FOR UMC INTERNATIONAL SERIES
"France: A Country of Beauty, History and Progress" will be presented by William LaPorte-Lewis on Monday, March 16, as part of UMC's International Series. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with an ethnic dinner for $8, followed by a 7 p.m. program in Brown Dining Room of the UMC Sahlstrom Conference Center. To reserve a place at the dinner, call 8586.

GLOBAL ECONOMY AND YOUR RETIREMENT PLANS
UMC will receive an ITV broadcast from the Twin Cities as part of the brown bag lunch series. The next session will be on Tuesday, March 17th from 12 noon until 1 p.m. in 133 Kiehle Hall. The seminar is designed to examine the condition of the world economy. This seminar will focus on world markets in terms of valuation and potential returns; risks and opportunities; investment tactics; and making investment choices regarding retirement planning. The seminar will be presented by Richard Worthington and Fredrick Feuerherm from Minnesota Mutual.

1997-98 POCKET TRAVEL GUIDES UPDATED
The Pocket Travel Guide has been updated for 1998. The Guide is your handy "nutshell" reference for University business travel. It contains meal and mileage reimbursement rates, emergency phone numbers for contract travel agencies, hotel and car rental phone numbers and expenses that are reimbursable and non-reimbursable. Every traveler should have a copy.

HR CONSULTANTS VISIT UMC
Three Human Resource consultants from the Twin Cities campus will be visiting UMC on Tuesday, March 17. Javier Silva, Barb Kranz-Tayor, and Kate Schaefers will make a presentation regarding performance appraisals and the supervisor's role in career development to the Chancellor's Cabinet in the morning. They will also make a second presentation in Sahlstrom Conference Center 131 from 12 noon until 1 p.m. The noon session is open to all UMC employees. The topic for the noon session will be the employee's role in career development followed by a question and answer period. Feel free to bring your lunch or food from Morsels to the noon meeting. JUGGLER TO PERFORM AT UMC
Chad Taylor, juggler, will perform Tuesday, March 17, at 8 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. Taylor is a man of surprising talents and wide ranging experiences. But it is his "Chainsaw of Death" comedy and juggling act that has gained him the most notoriety. He has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, An Evening at the Improv, America’s Funniest People, in Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night and television shows in Japan, Germany, Spain and Budapest.

All faculty, staff and students are invited. There is no charge.

TECHNOLOGY FORUM
Technology Forum, sponsored by the Technology Working Group and Chancellor Sargeant, will be held Thursday, March 19, SCC AB, at 3 p.m. An update will be provided of the UMC technology plans for next year. In addition, there will be some short demonstrations and an opportunity to discuss ideas and questions related to technology.

The 1998 U-Wide Contract Books are ready! They were distributed in January to deans, directors, and department heads, area managers, and faculty and staff on Purchasing/Travel Services mailing lists.

The Travel Section lists all of the current travel supplier contracts, as well as University Internal Service Organizations (ISOs) that provide travel, hospitality and event services.
