ECUADOR TOPIC FOR UMC INTERNATIONAL SERIES
"Ecuador: The Land of the Incas" will be presented by Marcelo Campoverde on Monday, March 9, as part of UMC's International Series. The evening begins at 6 p.,m. with an ethnic dinner for $8, followed by a 7 p.m. program in Brown Dining Room of the UMC Sahlstrom Conference Center. To reserve a place at the dinner, call 8586.

GLOBAL INVESTING SEMINAR
UMC will receive an ITV broadcast from the Twin Cities as part of the brown bag lunch series. The next session will be on Tuesday, March 10th, from 12 noon until 1 p.m. in 133 Kiehle Hall. The seminar is designed to help University employees plan for their financial future. This seminar is titled "Using an Efficient Frontier Strategy" and it will focus on the many advantages of global investing. Todd Hoppock from Scudder will discuss methods you can use to reduce the level of risk in your investment portfolio.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM
UROP application material is now available from the following individuals: Connie Batten, Information Networking Management; Arlyss Grosz, Health Management; Melissa Hower-Moritz, Equine Science; Mark Huglen/Sonia Spaeth, Sport and Recreation Management; Richard Nelson, Agricultural Management; Marsha Odom, Arts and Sciences; Chris Robberts, Food Processing Management; Robert Smith, Management.

Completed applications should be returned to the Academic Affairs Office by 4:30 p.m. on April 6 (late applications will not be accepted). UROP offers financial awards to undergraduate students for research, scholarly, or creative projects undertaken in partnership with a faculty member. UROP affords undergraduates the unique educational experience of collaborating with a faculty member on the design and implementation of a project. It encourages students to conduct research and pursue academic interests outside of their regular courses by employing them to work on special projects. UROP applications are judged on the quality of the proposed project and the educational benefit to the student. Copies of UROP proposals submitted by UMC students that have been funded are on reserve in the library.

SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR YOUNG WOMEN
The "Summer Institute for Young Women" will be held June 21 through 24 at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The institute focuses on career opportunities and leadership roles in traditional and non-traditional occupations related to agriculture and rural America. Young women in 9th and 10th grades in the 1997-1998 school year are encouraged to apply. Information can also be found on the Internet at:

POLICY CHANGE - MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT RATE INCREASES
Effective January 1, 1998, the mileage reimbursement rate for use of personal vehicles on University business increased from 31.5 cents to 32.5 cents per mile, consistent with the IRS Revenue Rulings.

BOYS TOURNAMENT
Section 8A Boys’ Basketball Tournament is slated for Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13, in Lysaker Gymnasium at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). Sub-Section 30 champions play Sub-Section 31 champions at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Sub-Section 29 champions play Sub-Section 32 champions at 8 p.m. also on Thursday. Friday the third place decision will be played at 6:30 p.m. with the championship game at 8 p.m.

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

STATE UNIVERSITIES OF AMERICA (SUA) HOTEL CONTRACT GOES ON THE WEB
The 1998 discount rates of the State University of America Hotel Agreement are now on the web. The SUA contract contains deep discount rates, some as high as 50%, for hotels in 96 cities throughout the U.S. The new agreement runs from January 1, 1998 through December 31, 1998. The web site is:
http://www.uc.edu/sua and is password protected. In order to access the pricing information, you must enter the password "stsuadisc."

When visiting the web site, please read the instructions located in the introduction page carefully. These instructions tell you how to identify the discount rate when making a reservation. You need to indicate "The State Universities of America Faculty/Staff Discount Rate" and for those hotels that have a group discount code indicated at the bottom of their listing, you need to give this code when making reservations.

Some hotels have agreed to provide special conference/group discount rates based on two levels of booking, 1) 100 rooms or less and 2) 101 rooms and above. If a hotel has offered these rates, the information will be listed below the rates for individual travel. If your department is planning a conference, please attempt to utilize and give first consideration to the hotels that have stipulated conference/group rates. When attempting to use conference rates, please ask to speak directly with the hotel sales manager.
