PRESIDENT’S AWARD
An award recognizing faculty and staff who have provided exceptional service to the University has been established and is given during the spring. Called the President's Award for Outstanding Service, this award honors active or retired faculty or staff members who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community. Nominations for this award are due by April 1.

Nominators must be alumni or current members of the University of Minnesota faculty or staff. Nomination letters should focus on the nominator's personal knowledge of the nominee's exceptional service, such as innovative service to students, the University community, individual units of the University, or outreach beyond the University. Nominations should be submitted to the President's Award Committee, c/o Vickie Courtney, University Senate Office, 427 Morrill Hall. For more information call 612-625-9369.

POTLUCK
March Madness Potluck will be held Tuesday, March 2 in Brown Dining Room, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Since we ran out of hot dishes last time we are asking you to divide up food by last name:

A-J -- Salads
K-Q -- Hot dishes
R-Z -- Sweets

Plates, silverware and beverages will be provided. If you need to use the ovens or refrigerators in dining services, just call Debbie Stumblingbear at 8538. We hope to see many of you again, as the last potluck was such a great success.

FINANCIAL SECURITY SEMINAR
UMC will receive an ITV broadcast from the Twin Cities as part of the brown bag lunch series. The first session will be on Tuesday, March 3rd from 12 noon until 1 p.m. in 133 Kiehle Hall. The seminar is designed to help University employees plan for their financial future. The first seminar is titled "College Funding." It will explain how to prepare for a large financial goal like college tuition. David Soloway from Vanguard will discuss tax credits, tax-advantage savings accounts, and other investment options. This session is free to all UMC employees. Bring your lunch and join us at noon.

GIRLS’ SECTION 8A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SET
Section 8A Girls Basketball Tournament is slated for Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6, in Lysaker Gymnasium at UMC.

Sub-Section 30 champions play Sub-Section 31 champions at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Sub-Section 29 champions play Sub-Section 32 champions at 8:00 p.m. also on Thursday. Friday the third place decision will be played at 6:30 p.m. with the championship game at 8:00 p.m.

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

CRITICAL ISSUES IN BIOETHICS
On March 8–13, key speakers in the national discussion on ethical issues involved in biomedical research and medical practice will participate in a series of conference workshops, seminars and public lectures to be held in Grand Forks ND, Crookston MN and Mentor MN. The conference title is "Critical Issues in Bioethics."

Among the guest speakers for the conference are: Tom L. Beauchamp, senior research scholar and professor of philosophy, Kennedy Center for Bioethics, Georgetown University, Washington D.C.; Ann Cook, MPA, project director, Exemplary Services, The Rural Institute on Disabilities, University of Montana, Missoula MT; Ruth R. Faden, Philip Franklin Wagley Professor of Bioethics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore MD; Jeffrey P. Kahn, director, Center for Bioethics, associate professor, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis MN; David M. Robinson, director, Vascular Research Program, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda MD; and James W. Thomasson (Conference Convener), associate professor of philosophy, University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), and executive director, The Woodside Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Mentor MN.

The conference is a collaborative venture of The Woodside Center for Interdisciplinary Studies; Altru Health Foundation; Riverview Healthcare Association; University of Minnesota, Crookston; University of North Dakota Medical School and School of Nursing; and the Offices of Instructional Development and Research and Program Development at UND.

NORTHWEST URBAN FORESTRY WORKSHOP
The 14th Annual Northwest Urban Forestry Workshop will be held Tuesday, March 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Youngquist Auditorium, Northwest Experiment Station. The Workshop is sponsored by UMC Office of Continuing Education and Natural Resources Department, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and the Headwaters Area Shade Tree Advisory Committee.
