of University Relations (formerly External Relations) at informal

STUDENT SELF-REGISTRATION
As of the start of business on Friday, February 6, 215 or 46%
of the total students registered (469) for Spring Quarter, have
self-registered using either web self-registration or the Student
Access System. Please send any comments or concerns you may have
regarding self-registration via e-mail to "nelson" or
call 8560.

MILEAGE RATE CHANGE
In response to a change in IRS mileage reimbursement rates,
the University has adjusted the mileage reimbursement for use of
personal vehicles for University business. Effective 1/1/98:

UNIVERSITY
SENATE
The University Senate will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, February
19 with a telephone connection to the proceedings in 305 Selvig
Hall. Agenda includes: action on a motion concerning student
evaluations of teaching, an amendment to the uniform grading
policy, constitutional and bylaw amendments reflecting the
recommendations of the Task Force on Faculty Consultation,
discussion of the draft policies on Sexual Harassment and
Nepotism and Consensual Sexual and Romantic Relationships, and a
discussion with President Yudof.

RAISING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
A Satellite Town Meeting "Raising Student Achievement:
Schools, Communities, and Challenging Standards" will be
held Tuesday, February 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Sahlstrom
Conference Center AB.
This is a live, interactive teleconference
about community efforts to improve teaching and learning
sponsored in partnership with the National Alliance of Business
and the US Chamber of Commerce. US Secretary of Education,
Richard Riley, will welcome a panel of experts from local
schools, businesses and service organizations to discuss: How
standards transform teaching and learning; how schools and
communities raise learning standards and help students master the
basics and acquire advanced skills; how schools and communities
implement rigorous assessment systems to find out whether
students have met high standards; and how teachers and
administrators engage parents, social service providers and
members of the community in planning the academic and cultural
life of a school.

UMC Insight will be aired Saturday, February 14, at 8:45 a.m.
